can anyone tell me what the little thing that looks like a hair sticking down from the side is?
Ive seen this in soo many 16mm shots...

that is called.....hair.

Its usually an effect you get from shooting cheap 16mm cams.

Theres programs out there that can put that effect on your digital footage, like Magic Bullet for After Effects.

well ive seen it in almost every 16mm ski/snowboard movie ive ever seen, so cheap cams sounds a little odd

well I never see them in Arri cams, which run around $3000 for a legit setup...I see them with Bolex setups more often, which are around $800? Im not sure how much they run, but I do know they are more prone to it, and that their image is not nearly as clear as an Arri's.

used bolex's that still work w/ the standard 3 lenses and the reflex range around 300, and thats w/o the motor and everything. If you buy them brand new your most likely going to spend over a grand from what i've seen.

It is in fact hair. It happens when a piece of hair gets stuck in the gate and creates a shadow area on the film. It can happen on any film camera if you're not careful. To avoid it, you need a clean changing bag, clean mags and regular camera cleaning. Also it helps to check the gate between set-ups to ensure it's clean.

a lot of companies actually use old dirty cameras on purpose to get that oldschool effect, or they put it in after in post production.

i'm pretty sure it's done on purpose. I can't remember which movie but it was in a commentary over a Steele Spence part and Johnny D said something about it....something along the lines of they do it as art and a sign. Its a filmers gang sign :P
