Monarch

I'm trying to pick somewhere to go out west this year and I saw an article in ski magazine about monarch mountain. I know its really small and stuff but it looks like a good place to go for backcountry... my last trip out west was kinda disappointing the whole waist deep pow super steep back bowls thing didnt really come true... is monarch that kind of place? has anybody every gone on their cat tours or skied the bowls off to the right of the trail map? any info would be nice, pics would be great


and yes i checked out their website i just thought id check and see if theres any more info out there

The BC around there is not that epic, there are better places.

monarch is supposed to be good. ive only been to the surrounding backcountry. the cat tours are supposed to be worth every penny and you get alot of bang for ur buck. if ur looking for steep and challenging, it might not really cut it. no people though. if u want no crowds, alota snow and steeps try wolfcreek in co or powder mtn in utah. both places are super sick, affordable and i can't wait to go back to either one.

see my problem is finding better places... i went to copper and vail last time and the bowls were too easily accessed and too "skied".... ill get to the point i can ski the steep and deep and i like bumps but i suck at them... i dont really wanna go somewhere and ski 45 degrees of bumps the size of me all day

Backcountry? I'm not sure, but if you want sick pow, head across the border and head up to Kicking Horse.

most of CO doesnt receive as much snow as utah or other western states. wolfcreek is the exception. if you plan on skiing in bounds, every resort gets tracked out eventually. some faster than others. i suggest utah, but wyoming and montana are supposed to be good too. or u could just spend a cool mil on yellowstone club. totally worth it

this year I went to kicking Horse for a week. There bowls were amazing no too much of bumps and most of the time there is no more than 5 people in the same bowl (the difficult one).

Monarch is the shit, there are tons of fun drops there ranging from 5 to 30 ft inbounds if you know where to look. They opened up the new area mirkwood basin which is a bit of a hike but i lap it all day and get endless powder runs. While the runs are short the tree skiing there is a blast! Deffinately worth checking out if your with your family or dont have a bunch of money sitting around.

Like Jeff said above, Mirkwood is pretty fun, all hike acess, the runs are rather short, put it stays pretty fresh. My problem with Monarch is that it is'nt very steep, i have been there when they got 18" overninght and you could hardly move. I have also done a cat tour there, and it was really fun, nice snow, trees, but nothing too gnarly. I would recommend you go to Crested Butte, and pray for snow. If you hit CB after a dump it will be the best day of your life. If you want steep rocky terrain, it is the best in Colorado hands down.

maybe check out Telluride too, i heard its pretty sick there, but i've never been there myself
