Which camera to buy?

I'm looking to buy a entry level DSLR.  I'm torn between a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel.  I'm concerned which one has better image quality.  ik the canon has more MP, but it seems like the nikon has a better sensor, and 6.1 MP is definitly enough.  I'm on a budget too so what are the pros and cons of each, or what are some other good options in that price range.

I have an Xti and I love it to bits!
Its easy to understand and takes awesome pics.
You should get one, you'll have people telling you for ages what a good choice it was (but you'll know that anyway)
