Where would I earn the most money?

G'day,

I'm halfway through my degree and need a break. Ideally, I want to work for 4/5 or so months in a ski resort o/s this summer. I want to know where I will EARN the most money. I don't care if I come home with less money than I went with, I don't care how much living expenses are, I simply want the highest taxable income when converted to aussie $$.

This is because I need to reach the strange and frustrating Australian government income requirement to declare myself independent (for some reason living on the other side of the country from my parents isn’t enough!) so I can receive youth allowance/rent assistance for my last few years at university. As this will mean an extra $12,000 a year, allowing me to give up having to bust my nut working all the time to pay the rent, this is much more lucrative than a free lift pass.

All I need is to reach $17,500 of taxable income within a 19 month time-frame. The greater the sum I earn working O/S the sooner I can claim youth allowance and rent assistance.

So any advice on where I can get PAID the most would be grand! This info seems to be impossible to come by, all I ever hear is which place has subsidised accommodation and free season passes etc which is great for most but somewhat useless for my situation.

Ideally, I would like advice on where a ski instructor is paid best. Basically I’m tossing up between German-speaking Europe and Canada. I speak fluent German and that odd sublanguage of Schweizerdeutsch so Germany/Switzerland/Austria (I’m also a citizen so no problems there).

Also, as I would only be 21 for the end my working holiday I’m not so interested in going to the USA just because of the night life situation.

As soon as I opened the thread, I thought Switzerland. You will make more here than you will in the surrounding EU countries I'd assume just because the cost of living is much higher. If you can speak the language and are a citizen, you're golden. You'll really have no problems earning that much money in 19months. That's hardly any money at all per month. I live in Canada and know that you will not make as much money here as you will in Switzerland. You might want to look into the following places:

honestly, don't look at a job at a ski hill. Find a way into a unionized job and work afternoons and nights. You can ride during the day and still make a shitload of cash. Try applying through a city or at hospitals, etc. They pay great and that way you can afford to ride and do/get other stuff, like a car for example.

come to alberta, spend october and november on the rigs then fuck off and ski for the whole season without a job. you'll easily make 15,000 in two months on the rigs.

Nowhere pays ski instructors huge money. Plus then you won't get any freeskiing, where's the fun in that?

I would have said move to Whistler and drive taxis - my roommate made ridiculous cash as a cabbie doing 2 night/2 days (so he still got 5 days riding a week). Except you're Aussi so no-one would tip you.

go work at a resort, possibly consider taking half a year in north america, as the ski industry is a lot bigger here than down under. it depends on where you go, but it is definetly pssible to make money (net), one of the easiest ways to to have two jobs, say instruction during the day, and bussing tables at night. whether you're able to actually save money depends on your living costs, which ultimately depends on where you're living.

if you can, stack wood. you can get about $20/hour over here, but its more of a summer thing. and it sucks balls.
