I blame it all on Aspen. That, and there is a lot of big machinery that is used to make skis. That is not cheap.

It costs a lot to make skis... the materials arent cheap... the machinery isnt cheap. It costs a lot of money in R&D to develop skis. Skiing is deff wicked expensive... But its soo worth it though.

Go ask your parents for their most recent bill for electricity to your home.
Now imagine what it would cost to run those power-draining lifts, snowmaking, and overall infrastructure (think lodges, and all buildings), as well as paying all the employees and making expansions, while still being a profitable business that only thrives on a few months of heavy business.
It'll all be put into perspective then.

Insurance. it it werent for fat ass gapers and fat lawyers suing ski resorts, prices would be a lot lower. And people only wanting the biggest and best ski resorts drove away smaller and cheaper competition, like all the small local hills.

why is anything expensive?
inflation, technology, supply, demand, market fluctuations... and so on and so forth.

erm last season it was like $80 for a day pass to aspen highlands I'm pretty sure. I remember goin there once with comp pass cuz I worked at copper, but it was like $80 or somethin ridiculous for a normal adult to ski there. not many places are more than that... Fact of the matter is, if parks and mountains in general are already wayyy overcrowded imagine what it'd be like of the majority of the people in our country could actually afford to do it.

you can brake to 10pair of skateboard a years, you can brake a skateboard in a day, ski are harder to break in 2piece. there are alot of other sport to do if u cant afford skiing, but if u like skiing you can afford it. you dont need all next year stuff, the only money u need is to buy ticket at the mountain

electricity? that's your best argument? The biggest factor is insurance.

It is expensive becuase that is how much people will pay for it. If people were not willing to pay over $500 for a pair of ski you would not see companie's selling for $550. So the person to blaim for the price of skiing is yoursleff.

Insurance is part of the equation. As are energy costs.
There are many reasons. I didn't say energy costs were the sole reason for the cost of participation within the sport.
I simply pointed out on of the glaring reasons for the hgih cost. Oveall, the costs to run a resort these days are VERY high.

because big companies that have nothing to do with skiing and buy them out a charge sky high prices. However, the smaller companies do it to compete with the big companies

SKIING
Twice as expensive as crack, but 5 times the fun.

thats exactly fuckin right. People are afraid about global warming stopping skiing, but the real block to skiing will be rising energy prices. Theres so much energy that goes into running ski resorts. It would not suprise me if resorts would shut down and kids would just truck rails up there, then hand make jumps and hike everything in the future.
Besides that, skiing is expensive because of the high material cost and manufacturing. You see though, as companies like K2 and line go to china, the skis get cheaper. So as labor gets exported more and more, skiing may continue to get cheaper that way. Watch out, mexicans may take over the ski industry.

Dude if people stopped skiing the prices would actually have to go up so when they do sell a pair of skis they can compensate.

I used to think skiing was really expensive, but then I sank $9k into mountain biking. Problem solved.

why are name brand clothes so expensive?

Yeah, but you live out west, snowmaking is a hugely consumptive process, and for much of the east coast that's pretty much their only source of snow. Insurance is huge, but energy is certainly a major factor, and I wouldn't be surprised if at alot of eastern ski resorts it's more than insurance.

um skiing really isnt that expensive at all... the only thing is a pass which is like $200-700 for most places. and theres ways to get around that if you want to
All times are Eastern (-5)
