When I signed in I was left with a message that read: 'How do you have so many sponosrs with only those tricks?' (Referring to what I put in my profile, which I've now changed).

This bothers me. Not becasue I take offense, but because it makes me wonder as to how ignorant someone can be. Do you honestly think that the only way to get sponosored is to be able to land a list of tricks that the sponsor gives you? You have to be kidding me.

Being sponsored is hard work, contrary to what many of you may think. I used to think that I needed to get sponsored to be cool and that if I wasn't, I wouldn't be known as a good skier. This I soon figured out was bullshit. There are plenty of great skiers out there that never get sponsored. I've even caught myself thinking recently that I wished I wasn't sponosored, solely so I could ski when I wanted, where I wanted, with whomever I wanted.

Uoi have to understand that being sponsored is a full time job. Any sponosred athlete will tell you this. Many people (including the person that left me the message) believe that being sponsored is a complete blessing by the sompany and you now get showered in free product. Hardly the truth. You must first of all earn the respect of the company and it's reps, managers, team etc. Then you must be able to prove to them that you are worthy of the privelige to represent their company professionly. This means not being big headed or overly confident. It also means that you get yourself into as many competition, filming and demonstration opportunities as possible. You are constantly showcasing their product and they don't wan you if you have a bad attitude.

So when it all comes down to it. Being sponsored is not being able to complete certain tricks, it is being able to push the sport and better the company you are working for, yes 'working'.

There are pros and cons to everything. While I wll be the first to tell you that I adore skiing, and I'm extremely happy that I'm in the position I'm in, I will also tell you to really think about it if being sponsored is you goal.

I agree... Me and my friend just picked up a sponcer at then end of last year and now the pressuer is on.. we gotta work a lot harder so that we can progress with ahaid of every one around are hill and other close to ares in order to place well in contest and make them happy... We cant fuck around all day when we are tierd of training and just want to bring skiing back to the basics, we are gona realy have to use are time weelll

Um, yea... i dont think that your totaly right on that one. I ski with this kid who is sponcered by Nortica and it seams he only progess when i start to do some thing he cant. He just went to a local dome sale and got alot of offers to get a sponcership.
So far he has broken 3 pairs of 1,000 skis and is now rideing on his 4th pair, he also get 700$ boots for free. So thats allmost 5,000$s and now he has slowed down it what he has been learing, im checking up to him in tricks and i have only been on skis for 1/2 a sesion. He was sponcered after his first year of skiing after skiboarding. He has won a few comps around but nothing that big.
I now relise that getting sponcered will only make my progression slower. So i guess there was a fourm that actuly helped me.

u could try ignoring it, u know that anyone talkin shit isnt chill, and they dont deserve the attention they crave, most likely theyre lookin up at u sayin, 'fuck him, hes sponsered and i suck ass, now im gonna talk some shit', theyre obviously to stupid to see what criticism does and dosnt accomplish, so ignore them, and at the end of the day your still u and theyre still cuttin people down to make themselves feel better

i totally totally agree, most people think being sponsored is about being the best and getting alot of free stuff when a true ski sponsorship can be anything from getting a free t shirt or getting your pass payed for to getting a new pair of skis each weeek..... most companys wont take you unless you can help out the company in more then 1 way.... look at tanner, he doesnt only support armada he helps make the skis and is pretty much a rep all to himself..... sponsors are looking for people that can sell, support and represent on and off the hill..... i kinda repeated what the very first post said but it was a very good point.....

Misty 7, you should spend more time skiing and having fun doing it. The sponsors will come to you. I know its a hard reality because you want to show off all your gear to kids at school but you have to be totally ready, and when you are, it'll happen. This is what people told me and I pursued anyway.

You say you've only been skiing for 1/2 year? thats hardly enough time to represent a company, so practice more. And your Nordica friend sounds as if he could be sponsored because he's also a nice guy and thats what the companies looking for in an ambassador. So instead of being his rival, learn from eachother.

Its funney becuase he was going switch 9s and trying more stuff but all he learned last year was Rodeo, Switch Rodeo and he laned like 2 or 3 corked 7s. I really think its becuase he is sponcered, im trying things befor he trys them now cuse. He dosent want to take any risk cuse he is allredy sponcered.

you cant just be a midwest weekend huck that has every trick in his tricktionary checked off twice...you gotta live, eat breath the sport. I know how back in the day all i was ever thinking of was how im gonna land this trick, how im gonna get my video together and get sponsored...That isnt the case really these days...Its all about how you represent the company and yourself as an athlete.
Back in my early days, I had just moved to whistler to ski my ass off for a a few seasons and you know, chase the dream. I was bootfitting in a ski shop where i had constant contact with reps. Just talking to them about product, letting them know i am interested and shit. Dont go in drooping names and telling him what hot shit you are and why he should sponsor you, then you sound like any punk ass looking for a free ride. Let him get YOU on the equipment whether it be demos to start, but get in at the demo level and work your way up. You have to realize that you are helping him out helping yourself out. You represent the product properly, post some results, get some photos published (local newspaper, local mag) rockin their shit and they will see that you are doin it for them... But like austin said, you cant be judged on how many tricks you can do, its how well you can stick your neck out to get their product recognised...and it helps to have a few friends...

ive been trying to get sponsored by some companys but now after what all of u said i think ill just wait for them to come to me. i just want to ski every day and have fun. that would suck not to ski everyday.

too many things can turn skiing into a job, when your sponsored,you cant take that day off when our hurting, instead you have to go do a demo or something else, and you are expected to throw down, sure you might want to, but if youre hurt or the skkiing is bad its the perfect recipe to get hurt, dont expect the pros to throw down the stuff you see in mivie if they are traveling along, you have to understand they are only going to want to do that kind of stuff in the right enviroment, with the people they know.
On anotther aspect so many people seem like they out to prove themselves they have to let every one know how good they are, to me it is better to just know that i know how good i am what i can do, and not compare myself to others, but rather do the trick for myself not needing someone elses recognition to be happy, for example alhtoughhtis doesnt happen with skiing as much, wheni rollerblade i often am alone, landing a trick by myself is ten times more satisfying than when other people are around, because you did the trick to land it, not to show others what you can do.
may be a littlk off topic, but it came to my mind when reading this so , oh well

Misty 7, it doesnt matter what trick you throw. It's how you throw it. Instead of worrying about his switch 9 (that may be off a 10 foot jump). Try worrying about getting your fives down with style. And 'sponsored' is spelt like this. Not spanceured.

i cant switch 9, i was tlaking about my freand who is sponcered by Nortica. HE did them over 55 foot tables with saftys, they where sick.

For me it was all about the right place at the right time,I was out in the water talking to my friend and some guy I didn't know. Turns out he was the rep for MCD and he said he could probally do something for me. After getting a couple solid comp results I was really in.

ok im sponsored by a clothing company and half by dynastar and i have still been throwing down i feel no pressure from the companys at all at no point do i miss a day of skiing for 'work' or what u guys say being sponsored

um...yeahhhhhh. I'm gonna have to go ahead and tell everyone talking about how being sponsored is hard work that they are silly. Skiing is supposed to be fun and you're not employed by a company if you're getting free product...smarten up. Skiing isn't hard work even for the people who get payed and as Wu Tang says 'I bet..you're not a fuckin' vet.' So quit talking about all of your obligations and pro-ness and go skiing you pussies.
