Is the nikon d40 a good camera

it gets the job done for sure. not to sure on the differences other then the sensor. but the D40 will get you started, might rather get the d40 and a 200-300mm lens then just the D80 and a 50mm.

its a good camera for just starting, although lenses are expensive because they have to have the focusing motor in them (assuming you want auto focus), deffinetly worth the $600
