I would urge you to wait at least one semester before doing so. It is a big commitment and you need to get a feel for the right ones. I know too many kids that were lured in too quickly and without giving it much thought. I rarely here kids that are in fraternities bash their experience WHILE still in school, but after graduating I know countless people that wished they would have spent their four+ years differently. Frats are def. for some people dont get me wrong, but they promise you so much to get you to join and its hard to say no, dont rush (no pun inteneded) into it too soon, thats all.
i don't know about other campuses but i know for a fact that 90% of the frat guys at UMass are fucking pricks, in all of the chapters they are pricks, out of all the frat parties i went to i saw them slip pills into girls drinks and not let in people who's skin is black it was pretty fucked up and then i got into a fight with one of the brothers aha wow alcohawl is a hell of a drug
yeah check them out man. frats will host a ton of parties. it's cool to go over to one as a none member and just get a feel for the place. i went to plenty that were shit holes, but had great brothers. then i saw one that was really nice and the people seemed chill at first. got to meet a couple more brothers and it turned out they were cocks.
i started school later than most people would, so i kinda excluded myself from the rushing and stuff. i thought it would be odd for me. but i know a couple kids that wre pretty stoked about it and joined. i had one friend that rushed a frat in the fall, found out they were cocks and rushed a diffrent one in the spring. he was extremely excitd about his second choice.
anyway, college is what you make it, whether in a frat or not. i have a great time not being in one, i'm sure i'd have a great time if i was in one. college will have it's positives and negatives no matter what. right now i wish i had some brothers around to kick it with and just have a good time, but i dont' all my friends are back home and i'm alone. i'm sure during the school year i'd just anna take a break from people and if i was in a frat i wouldn't necessarily have that option.
so check it out and go with your gut.
PS: the days of your dad's frats were way different. the stories my step-dad tells me sound so awesome. i never see a frat like that.
oh i don't mind frats, they're pretty fuckin' cool around here in boulder. except when the house gets too full and they don't let anyone in, that sucks.
actually, at some schools, it's cheaper to live in house, pay dues, and all the beer you can drink than it is to pay for on-campus housing.
When I was in a fraternity, we had a full time chef, parking, all the alcohol we wanted, and I had a single room and it was a few hundred bucks less than living in a shitty dorm with a shitty meal plan where you would have to pay extra for parking and beer.
but most of the money is for insurance. Only a few hundred bucks are for dues, which is lame as hell, and I doubt I would have joined in the first place if it had been more expensive than living on campus.
to those of you who answered seriously, thanks. It was helpful. I am sort of wondering about the initiation process. Obviously, hazing has been cracked down upon, at least to some extent. Can anyone that has gone through pledging shed some light on what goes on? Perhaps give some examples of things you had to do. I know several people have said that they had practically no spare time while they pledged. What exactly was it that occupied so much time? Also, some schools do not allow students to rush until second semester, some others do. Is it an option to rush during either semester at the schools that do?
for those who are IN fraternities, it would be grounds for debrotherment if they said what happened during initiation. All I will say is that I was not hazed and initiation was fair and not degrading.
I had spare time during rush/initiation, though I didn't use it well. We had events twice a week, but was at the house 5 nights a week. PM me if you have any more questions.
yeah that guy looks like a fuckin tool, but the livestrong has nothing to do with it
livestrong is a good cause, and it doesnt matter if its supported by a tool, or a really really god hearted person-- its a good cause, dickwadfacewhorebreath
I lived with two Sigma Alpha Mu brothers this past year....all of the guys in the fraternity were great to hang out with and it really was like a brotherhood...they would do anything for each other...i guess its all about finding the right fraternity for you
honestly, hazing from house to house varies INSANELY. One house doesn't haze, anohter you will be doing nasty shit for months. It depends soooo much on your house.
I had a lot of stuff to do. But even with being in a really time consuming major(arhictecture) I still had free time. Like you will still party on the weekends. hazing really depends on the school and the chapter. I never had to do anything stupid or nasty. Most everything in pledgeship(again depending on the house) will be important to you becoming a brother and will teach you a lot. I waited until the spring and I had a great idea what fraternities had dicks, and which ones were chill.
I've had a couple of friends go thorugh the process and quit half way through and others that have stayed in it, both telling me a little about the hazing (although they really arent supposed to say anything). From what I understand it def. is not something that is dangerous by any means, the worst I have heard of is sleep depravation but even that is not common. Basically what I was told is they make you do a shit load of cleaning, sometimes for no reason at all. I also heard that they will call you up at random ass hours and be like yo I need a hot dog (like some diddy shit on making the band). You drag your ass down to queens get the mother fucker a hot dog and thats it. Its usually just stupid petty stuff, a lot of which you'll have to do with your pledge class in order to ensure bonding. Once again this is not first hand experience so take it for what its worth. All I know is that when you get to school youre going to hear a lot of "yo you wanna come hang with the brothers tonight, we can show you what were all about" get used to it. sounds like bro rape...
