How long does a cracked vertebrae take to heal?

I have a cracked vertebrae in my lower back from a pretty hard ski crash at the end of the season. The doctors said 5 weeks, but after 2 months it still hurts like a bitch whenever I fall or trip or do anything.
So I got an x-ray. I'm still waiting for a new diagnosis, but they say it should be done by the end of the summer. to prevent more back injury should I get a brace or something? That would make it really hard to grab on spins unless my arms grew even longer than they are and I became a gorilla.
Help?

Physio Therapy.
HIGHLY recommend it. They'll get you fixed right up.

I hurt my back really bad 1.5 years ago. It took me 4 months to be skiing again, but Im just now performing at 100% Your doctor probably meant 5 weeks till you can live life normally. Most doctors arnt aware of how much impact and flexibility is needed in this sport.
Now my injury was a little differnt than yours but to recover I needed to stretch a ton hamstrings, upper and lower back. Also build your muscles up to make your body stronger so theres less impact on your back. Quads, lower back and abs are essential in skiing and the stabalize your vertebraes.

i ride with a back support they are good if you get a good make like dianees ( cant speel it) scott or forcefield u dont lose much fleabilty, but you need to do plenty of back exercieses at the gym because you dont build any mussel from skiing with them on coz they take alot of the force and weght on ur back away.

train and strech. alcool and drugs are the worst thing you could use to help the recovery process

I would check with the doctors about possible pinched nerves.

i had 6 compression fractures in my back about 3 years ago. i dunno how different that is from a cracked vertebrae, but it happened in early march, and by late june i was tubing and waterskiing full out again.

i got the same thing right now.
ive been going to therapy for like 3-4 months now and its not getting any better...but the good thing about it is when you go there, you just work on abs the whole time. Why you injured it was probably becasue your ab core wasnt strong enough, so when you go to therapy, you just go there and get a 6 pack hah.
but yeah treat it asap before its too late...i got mine from squating and didnt treat it and now its going to carry on through out my football season. Another thing is if you dont treat it in time, your body will try to take stress off it and it will hurt somehting else. I also have asomething strained in my hip, which is also not healing. The pain is now in my hip, lower back on the left side, and moving to the right side of my back. So its like a chain...and the longer you wait, the worse it will get.
get it treated.

the healing time can vary.
i broke the TVP's (transverse process... make a "hang loose" with your hand, they're your tumb an pinky) off of three Lumbar verts. This also severed the conection for one of my big quad muscles that connect in the lower back. So, working your abs and lumbar muscles is important, but don't forget your butt, hips, and quads... everything goes through your back. I had a couple of back braces that looked like corsets. After three weeks I could ski groomers in them (just NO falling). After two months I placed 3 at big mtn. nationals (it helped that i didn't fall there either).
So, it can really vary. I heal abnormally fast. But make sure you work out everything from your knees to your shoulders. Since I've healed I know also wear a cockroach (back spine) when I ski.

i had a compression fracture and a cracked vertebrae two years ago... they took about 12 weeks to heal, but be 100% sure you're good to go if you have ANY hesitation or pain. i had three doctors tell me never to get on skis or my bike again- i've since ridden DH/FR two summers and survived a ski season with no discomfort at all. that being said, i had a full recovery that went smoothly, but someone else in this thread said they're paralyzed for the rest of their life- every spinal injury is completely unique and you have to make sure your back is good to go before you try anything.
people who break their back and then whine/complain/bitch about how long the recovery is make me want to go on a killing spree. you broke your back and you aren't paralyzed- don't you have enough to be thankful for??? when i broke my back, the pain was unreal, but the FIRST thing i remember doing was kicking my feet as hard as i could just to make sure i could still feel them... after that someone could have set me on fire and it wouldn't have mattered to me- i was just thankful beyond description that i wasn't paralyzed. if you injure your back BE CAREFUL and take it easy as long as you have to- you've been blessed once, be thankful and don't push your luck.
i know the thread creator wasn't bitching, i've just heard people in the past complain about how long a back injury takes to heal and it just blows my mind... just be glad you can still walk.
