Russia is not a real threat. Their comments a few months back about aiming nuclear weapons at out new ballistic missile defense systems which have radar instillations in Europe is just there futile attempt to check our hegemony and keep some semblance of balance of power. Basically they wont be starting any wars they just like to talk.
North Korea is not a direct threat to us at all. Their last missile test was laughable. They lack the means of delivering a missile to the US effectively. But South Korea is threatened a bit. People claim Kim Jong-ill is crazy but in-fact he is smart. By developing Nuclear weapons you gain more respect on the international level. I don’t see him using nuclear weapons in war but instead to gain an advantage in other areas which will strengthen his country as a whole and economically.
Al-queada is a minor threat they are terrorist (then need us to be scared for there tactics to be effective). They are incapable of bring the US down. The only thing that would pose a real threat would be if they could acquire significant biological weapons such a small-pox. They will continue to be a minor threat.
China is a real threat from multiple perspectives. They are certainly developing a formidable military which is slightly unsettling. But the more pressing issue is there incredible economic development. In the future the strength of their economy will threaten US hegemony as they will emerge as the most powerful state in the world be economic means. Basically when that happens were going to need to be real good friends with them.
Back on Topic.
I did not head Obamas statement but from what ive read hear I agree with him. We need to stabilize the current Pakistani government. If the radicals take over, expect a nuclear war between Pakistan and India. And any nuclear war is a big deal because we will back India and other nations will follow on both sides possibly escalating to a WWIII scenario. I don’t know if sending troops in is the best way to stabilize the region. (look at Iraq, we turned and acceptable stable non-treating regime into a huge breeding ground for insurgents and terrorists) But we must ensure their nuclear weapons remain in the hands of sane people.
