HELP in canada...

some friends and i from north carolina are looking to go to canada during christmas holiday from college, like the week after christmas probably into new years. does anyone have some good ideas where to go with cool stuff to do as well as great skiing and possibly less commercial? cost is a factor too...thanks for helping out your southern brothers

whistler comes to mind, but good luck booking that now. You have to book very far in advance. Maybe Mt. Washington? what do you want to ski?

wait, cost is a factor and you want to travel across the continent and into another country? there's this magical land that's much closer and cheaper to get to... it's called "Coloradical". i'd suggest looking into it if cost is enough of a factor that you have to mention it.

colorado huh?...i think i've heard of that. we just haven't been to canada before...montreal is an option for sure, but i think it would be cool to ski the rockies in a different country.

A few places to consider, in BC.

Of course, Whistler. But if you have money in mind, it may not be the best place. Don't worry though, BC offers some sick pow elsewhere.

-Kicking Horse Resort
Amazing place. Home of the "champagne powder". The view on the way up is truly amazing too. Seriously, worth visiting.

Fernie Alpine Resort
I've never been, but apparently a great place. I'm not sure how the park is, but it's supposed to be a great resort.

Mt. Washington
Second busiest ski resort in BC (it's on Vancouver Island). If your a pow hound, you'll be interested that it  recently added another chairlift which allows you to access A LOT of pow. Keep in mind the Boomerang chair. I'm not sure what the park is like... I went there to ski pow.

If you do go to Mt. Washington, you might as well visit Vancouver and maybe ski some of the local mountains for a day (Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, Mount Seymour). Or you may decide to hit up Whistler as well. There's a lot of options when it comes to skiing in BC (at least 25 ski resorts to ski). Decide carefully.

yeah, Coloradical's kinda a small place, not really a big deal, but sometimes people go skiing there. i've never been there once in my entire life (just like i've never cranked one out... right...), but i hear it's ok, but only if you're into having a good time, hanging out with your buddies, and bein sweet.

Yeah, if you sort of want 2/3 resorts near each other, try Apex, Silver Star, Big White. All remotely close to each other. Apex has dope park.

Kicking Horse is the BEST non-whislter resort in Canada.
Nobody who's been there can deny it. The snow and terrain are sicke.
It also has some pretty damn good deals...Calgary flights & packages from $900CDN & up. I wish I lived closer.

I've gotta agree with you, Kicking Horse is amazing. Def. worth going to if you're up in that area (Calgary). I'm a season's pass holder of Kicking Horse's sister mountain, so I get discounts up there... amazing resort.

I suggest if you guys are looking to party and ski. get to banff. there is buses that operate to lake louise, golden and sunshine. 99% of the time one if not all of those places has good snow. plus theres a hostel which is fairly cheap, or hotels like the driftwood inn that if you have 4 or more people going, its just as cheap or cheaper than the hostel. that would be your best bet. plus banff is full of girlls over christmas, just bring condoms and get yourself checked when you get home.

that post sucked. jsut gonna have to say it.

kicking horse is sweet, i'll agree. but the snow is well....inconsistent. to book there for a huge trip would a be a very risky thing to do because you might have alot of snow or hardly any at all. and during christmas time, kicking horse is not the greatest. it has sick steeps and everything but snow is risky.

Fernie. another sick place but i wouldnt reccomend it if youve never been there. it has awesome terrain and generally a fair bit of snow. really small town not a whole lot of nightlife but it has eerything from flat runs to double black steeps. id reccomend it unless you want to party alot too, and it will get extremly busy around then.

Mt.Washington... SUCKS

sure it gets alot of snow but its extremely heavy and wet and not alot of fun to ski in. coastal snow = no good. And being pretty much the main resort on the island, it is possibly one of the most crowded mountains you've ever been too. and thats jsut during normal season, during Christmas....my god. theres my rant.

oh and consider big white and silver star because they have fairly consistent snow, steep and moderate terrain depending on which one you go to and big white is the second biggestresort in B.C. besides whistler/blackcomb being number 1 and not half as busy as mt washington or even fernie

Go to whitefish montana, its cheap, close to canada, and if you exchange your american money for canadian, theyll take it at par, so it is like you were in canadia, but you can buy beer at the grocery store!

why are you putting the post down? it provided the basic profile of all the ski hills then you go and say all the hills have undertimable snow, then agree that you have the best hill(s)

i've skied a couple places in BC and Alberta and i liked all of them
Kicking horse can go into droughts for the season but they only last for acouple of days, once the season begans to slow down, so does the snow.  but there are storms that come, and they do come around winter holidays. last season we got a storm that brought 30 + a day for around a week during the holidays. and many people are agreeing that it is a good place to go, but the lines seem to get bigger on the weekends

Fernie is full of terrain that offers everything and Its RCR, so it might be a bit pricey, but you could buy tickets that offers skiing at all of the hills owned by them in the rockies and i havent experienced the night life there, so i cant say anytihng

Mt Washington i heard is epic, my friend skis there and she happens to enjoy it, i would really like to check it out, especcially with the new lift and terrain

havent skied bigwhite or silver star, but i would agree on them being good places to check out

i would also reccomend Lake louise: I grew up in the town for 12 years and it has gotten more and more expensive, but with a long season(nov-may) and ever so lovely snow, steeps and view, it would deff be a RCR place to check out, sweet park too!

Sunshine: wonderful terrain, and if your into hikes, check out dellirium dive(avy gear though)the snow is great there and you could get a pass for the three local hills(louise, sunshine, norquay) if you want to do them in 3 days

Banff is a busy town, it offers sunshie(20-30 min drive) and norquay(little hill, good skiing for families and park). and lake louise(45min)Banff has lot of bars to check out, watch out for the asian invasion when your there and once again the prices on everything

im pretty sure hes not gunna go across the country on a low cost trip to ski just park. people should ski everything when they have the chance. if its there BC in the morning, park after noon
