yea I heard this a few weeks back from a chick I meet that works in their ticket window.... supposely it will be a system similar to the one in place at solitude
Can't wait to hear all the alta locals bitching about the new system, those fools were bitchin about alta stepping up the ticket checking last year, like they shouldn't have their tickets check because they ski there so often blah blah blah, it'll be great!!

Whoaaa. Interesting. I thought Alta would be the last place on the planet to utilize any technology whatsoever into their lift ticket system.

Altaholics bitching party in 3..2..1... I'm half suprised alta has taken this long to upgrade into a technologically advanced system, but then again it is alta. Home to the biggest ego's around. (yes, bigger than the little shits running around park city blah blah blah.)

its so their old decrepid crowd isnt hassled by ticket checkers and im sure they can make an easy pass line to get more money out of them.

edit: Home to the biggest ego's ever on most of the older generation. I've met alot of younger gen that have kick ass attitude, but never have I met so many people with ego's that would start a smug storm.

im guessing it because altas crowd is more "old money" ppl think they are entitled to shit not that they've deserved it. the tourons in pc are rich and retarded as well but most lodges in alta see geezers from like 50-70 age range who think they own the place.

Not a huge deal considering that this is THE standard for every european ski area. Its easy and it actually cuts waste considering you can recharge the same card.

Oh no. I am going to miss the little special announcements on the tickets. So sad.
But anyway, why the heck do so many of you think Alta is "old geezers" with attitude problems? First of all, there are plenty of young people who shred ridiculously hard. Second, sure everyone who calls it home is a snow snob, but saying they have bigger egos than the kids at PC is kind of off-base. Each place attracts a different crowd, and the people who rip Alta think the PC goers are the ones who need ego adjustments. It goes both ways.

PC's ego is park rat teenagers just being teenagers (cocky/egotistical). The ego at Alta is the older dudes who've been skiing the same mountain for the last 30 years so they think thy own it. The younger kids that rip at Alta are some of the coolest most chill people around. Overall, I don't think the change in lift ticket procedure will cause any negative affect on the business. Sure their'll be some griping, but they'll come back.

most of the alta "snobs" are just pow hungry hippies who can't fathom why someone would want to ski in the park all day when there is a sick mountain to be ripped.
they will like this. less waste. recyclying blah blah. favors locals, not ghey touristys.

julie, I'm saying there are ego's at both places, but the ones at alta are horrible. I can strike up a convo with anyone at any other resort minus the canyons, and get no attitude at all. When I strike up a convo on the lift at Alta, It's pure baloney the things that I get looked down on and told. If I wanted to be scolded or told where I should or shouldn't be, I would fight with my grandparents. I'm not saying everyone is a snow snob. if you read my comment, like I said, I've met plenty of people at alta (generally of the younger generation) that are the nicest people. Yes pc attracts a different crowd, but i'm still sticking to my guns. Alta is worse as far as attitude goes. It's not off base to make that statement at all. Just like people that get nothing but crap from kids at pc and hate the resort because of it. I along with other people I know get nothing but shit at Alta. So the statement coming out my mouth, why we think Alta is "old geezers" with attitude problems, is because when we go to Alta, no matter where our home mountain is or what style our riding abilities lean towards, we deal with "geezers" with horrible attitudes towards us.

Anywho, I can think of far worse development changes to Alta -and Grizzly Gulch than lift ticket setups.

yea, altas got some old dickheads, but most of the younger crowd is cool. I think that most of the alta goers would like it.
does any1 know if it speeds up the lift lines? or does it stay about the same?

I'm all about not unzipping my jacket for the lifties! But it's not that big of a deal. After the first few weeks they get to know you have a pass and it's all gravy. Although I hate it when the ticket nazi comes out and checks you everytime. Even though they see you every 10minutes! That shits retarded. It's what you call taking your job to seriously!!! SPKA

that never happens to me, my grandpa skis there up to 150 days a year there and all his friends and him are deffintly alta snobs but they are really nice and dont give shit to nobody
ofcourse people at alta dont like park city, park city is so built up and its a totaly diffrent resort then alta. the older generations dont understand how "park citys park is the best"

i know they don't care about the parks. eh forget it. I don't have a problem with the younger ones (30 and under) it's always been the older ones we've had issues with. nevermind eh.

The Alta attitude gets pretty annoying after a while. From the super aggro "look at me, I'm a big mountain ripper" guys that think they're the shit, to the more out of shape alcoholic middle aged lifers that are so elitist and always in a foul mood unless it just snowed 2+ feet, and of course some of the old guys are just plain snobby. I didn't miss the place all that much last year. If I can get a student pass this year I might buy one again, no minimum credit hour requirement anymore...
Not to say you shouldn't go there if you're visiting, it's one of those things that only gets to you if you ski there a lot.
Who really cares about the electronic passes, I don't think it'll change anything that much.

Ahh shit, I just went to their website and they brought back the 12 credit hour minimum this year for the college pass. Guess I won't be getting a pass, I've got other shit to spend $1000 on.

anyone who mentions the alta-tude running over there is actually right, i worked there this past year about 5 days a week..its impossible not to notice. only makes you ride harder on your own though. ....you know what? im sick of that place....i saw some old guy in old ass ski pants covered with ducttape actually pole whip some no poler on the mountain (the old fart was a free heeler no less! how dare he!!)...and dont get me started on how they blow up on you once you make a jump, nevermind skiing switch...

RFID's are all bad. But Alta probably doesn't have the technology to use them like they're designed to be used for.

I understand what some of you are saying about how some of the older people there act like they own the place. But, it's never been annoying or a problem for me. And, I would much rather that scene than the 12-year-old park rat scene made up of kids who can only appreciate a terrain park.

Then you've never rode with people that appreciate the whole mountain! eh, both resorts have their pompous people, didn't mean to start a war, just relaying what I've dealt with when i've meandered on over to that part of the world.....

^well said. I have my issues with alta. So I've simply decided to just not ski there this year. Thats a decision for every individual to make. I realized I must do this and make sure not to talk the crap and then still ski there. After a season away from Little Cottonwood, I'll see how I feel. Until then its all speculation

Actually, I do appreciate and enjoy the whole mountain, and so do most the people I ride with. And yes, I agree, both places have their snotty skiers. All I said was I prefer Altatude.

Maybe this is a step in the right direction for Alta. Investing in infrastructure may mean a bigger investment in a park? But whether or not that is true, Alta is epic. The vast majority of skiers that ride there are unquestionably talented and have worked hard to deserve the endless freshies Alta has to offer.

thats sick, then you can just have a card in your pocket and the radio will pick it up without gomer tags.

Eh, I think the problem is they're investing in infrastructure. I guess the Collins lift had to happen eventually, high speed lifts are pretty much standard now, but burning down the Collins grill and building that concrete bunker thing instead? Not so cool, especially since hardly anyone can live up there anymore. Now lift tickets are $59/$54, hardly a good value. I remember when the passes were under $40, only 6? years ago.
So if you're not getting an Alta pass, where are ya goin? Are there any mountains that don't require 12 credit hours for a student pass? Cause that's the boat I'm in this fall.

hahaha good stuff...thats a funny post for 2 reasons...IF alta even has a park (like the super sweet one they had this past year consisting of 4 tiny ass jibs) it wont be worth coming...pay attention all people who ski in parleys....and second...the endless freshies you speak of at alta gets tracked out by...oh about noon or so?

first off to UTskier: the reason they replaced the collins grill with the new "concrete bunker" is that the old one was a pile of shit. even the emp.'s who lived up there prior to the tear down hated living up there cause it was so dirty. not to mention it had a max capacity of like 15 customers (exageration). simply put old collin's didnt make enough revenue.
Second:
alta-tude is very much a reality and a head ache.however, a misfortune of the young is to hate instead of simply understanding. the "old geezers" have their reasons for hating. partially (although they wont admit it)is b/c they're jealous of not having a "jibbing" opportunity that has graced every skier under the age of 25. another reason is b/c they see park rats coming to alta, who show off neon "steeze" and 270 on/off a box and think they're the shit... yet can't carve two turns if their lives depended on it. skiing is not a fashion show, which many jibbers do not realize (also pisses off the old timers). these jibbers come to alta, and think they can rip just as hard as the "cocky big mountain skiers" b/c they can ski ballroom without falling. it'd be the same as a big mt. rider goin to p.c., doin a 3, and then thinkin/claiming he can pull a cork 10 off a king's crown jump.
someone said it goes both ways, which it does. alta hates 'cause jibbers say they ride alta all the time when in fact its 5 days a year. jibbers have reason to hate on alta because, well, people from alta are (its true) assholes beyond belief. OBVIOUSLY, there are exceptions to what i have just explained.
