sponsership.
for me anyways.
all of you guys that are sponsered say just ski and someone will approach you. well, i hate to dissagree because people might be watching parks and see you out west, but where im from nobody sees you. you guys prolly here me talkin about this before but everyone at boyne(mi) where i ski sucks, and for the most part im one of the best there. nobody sees you though. i know im young and definately not good enough to get sponsered yet but in the future, how can i go about doing it? who do i have to know/talk to/become friends with?
lets nuke the bastards
whatever

yeah scott and jon both ski at the mountain and the highlands, i dont know about scott but jon first got noticed at the highlands by the spyder rep and now he is like one of the more well known skiers in the mid west and will probably be going to parkasaurus and crap this year.

The Schrabs ski there too! Anyhow the most effective method of sponsorship I think are 'sponsor me' vids and goin to comps. They like to see good attitude too.

There are plenty of reps based out of MI that hook people up. A lot of them are from the Boyne/Petoskey area, some down here in GR. Most of the guys spend a good majority of their time on the road therefor only can check out new talents at comps or whatnot. The best thing to do, in my opinion, would be seeing if you can pick up a shop sponsorship and then develop connections from there.

true enough. but there has to be a reason to sponsor you and once there is a reason there will be someone there to see it. The world is one big gigantic opourtunity and everybody knows or is somebody.
#1 competitions. Right now, it's the only way in. Our sport is not at a level to come in purely based on talent alone, you have to compete. That may not be truee in the future but for now, it is.
#2 the sponsor me vids really aren't a bad idea at all. but, like I said when your ready it will happen.
In general just be a normal cool kid. Talkin shit about other people = not good. I'm sure you don't but thats just a thing a lot of people aren't down with.
And lastly, as hard as it is to accept and understand. Your place of living is holding you back in more ways than a thousand. The bottom line of this game is exposure. you will eventually become a celebrity and have to be on constant show. So at some point your career (if this is what you pursue for a little while) will have to end up at either mammoth or whistler, so why not get a head start and already be there. it only makes things much easier.
hope that helps a little bit, I'm no expert but just tryin to give a lil help.
Peace

well nobody wants to stand there and film me everyone i know would rather ski so i cant quiet make a video. i did on march 2nd enter my first big air comp and i won and then this saturday im going to go compete at a bigger one and hope i place in the top ten (open - no age groups) and i might go to the midwests so im working on the comps thing. when you say you got like a shop to sponser you howd you do that cus ive never seen it
ps. i was criticized for saying im one of the better guys there but im at highlands and have not seen jon or scott there as far as i know. unless one of you wore a yellow coat and old pow airs last year - some guy was throwin rodeos a few times last year.

Just bring a video camera out with your ski buddys and take turns filming. Not only will you be able to throw together a lil sponsor vid but it's really good for working on style and variations and just making your trick look better.
hope that helps. It's going to be work if you wanna start going after sponsors just remember that. Think of how much you want out of the sponsor and then add in how many work hours you would have to put in to buy that product and it's exactly the same.

Jon - you say you will eventually end up in a place like Mammoth or Whistler so you might as well move there now - sometimes it's more benificial to stay in small places that are about to explode with exposure. I'm actually choosing to stay in Ontario for another season or two... or three - as long as it takes for my skiing to get up to pro level and beyond, and I think in a year or so it will be easy to get exposure in Ontario (as sad as that sounds), because there is a huge population base in southern ontario, SBC Skier is based here, every year we have bigger and bigger competitions - and if I move out to Whistler next year I'll be completely unknown in the ski world and have to start all over again, but in Ontario I don't have to work as hard to get known and I can improve my skiing while getting all the attention that I would miss out on if I were to move to Whistler.
So sometimes (depending on the situation) it could hurt you more than help you (in the short run - not in the long run) if you were to move out to the major resorts like mammoth and whistler.

Darryl definately has a point on a smaller scale. For sure it will be easier to get props from your buddies and maybe even a shop sponsorship etc. But you have to remember that whistler and mammoth are bot small communities as well and there are TONS of guys that own shops that are just completely stoked on guys who rip. Bottom line is that the best photographers in the world live in both of these places and if you want exposure and to get into the bigger mags, it's where it's at out here. I totally see what you mean though. With the oncoming amount of money about to be dumped into blue mountain with Intrawest it's inevitable that blue mountain is going to blow up. But, as I see it collingwood is still held back by the size of the hills. I'm sure it can grow to the popularity of Mt Tremblant but I think that people are still going to want to be in the mountains. There is something special about it.
But by no means am I putting down Ontario. Without Ontario I probably would have never even been exposed to this incredible sport. And an opinion is merely an opinion and is by no means the be all end all.

I'm not sure I should be saying anything, but Tag at Smith Sport is really chill about the whole sponsorship thing. He gives good advice on the whole subject and knows what hes talking about. I sent him a vid of me skiing and Next season I'll be riding for them which is really cool. Don't spam him or anything and be nice when you email him. tag@smithsporticom is where you can reach him. You may not get sponsored but he'll give you great advice on what to do.
Remember, more ofter than not it takes more than just being good, you have to be the best in your area!

yeah, lets face it, I live in the midwest too, and if you want to get a sponsorship other than just a little shop thing or small deal, you are going to have to move out west or somewhere where you can get recognition. I still say just ski to have fun and the sponsors will come if you are ready
