if i get a binding that only comes with wide breaks, and i just go to my local ski shop and buy regular breaks so that it fits on my ski? also, how much would reg breaks go for
i feel like a total noob asking this question... but whatever. If im getting a ski with an 86 waist and im looking at a binding that says it will accommodate up to a 85 waist.. is it going to be tight enough that i am going to have to bend the breaks out a bit/get a wide break... or will it be fine?
It'll be fine. Maybe bend them a little bit - leave it to your shop.
For the original question, ask your shop to swap them with some normal ones from a binding on the shelf. Wide brakes are always on short supply so they'd be stupid not to.
With my PE's (86 wide) I am using the 85 wide breaks. What I did was cut off, then sanded down the inside of the black plastic stopper on the end of the break - which was the part hitting the ski. I didn't cut off the whole thing, just the inside 1/4 of it so the if you run your finger down the inside of the break the metal onto the plastic runs straight (just don't cut too much that the metal shows through). This did it for me and they still stop fine if they fly off.
Even if you don't do any adjusting/cutting, after 3 or 4 times of watching it rub against the edges when you put your boots in, you're no longer concerned about keeping the ski pretty. The worst that'll happen is some scratching, no functional damage.
If you want I can take a picture tonight for you, let me know.
