Cameras - VX1000 vs GL1?

I'm looking to get a new camera and it's come down to the VX1000 or GL1 (both used). I can get the GL1 for a little bit more than the VX1000, so which should I go for?

Only reply if you actually know what you're talking about please.

GL1 all the way...awesome awesome camera.. this year in my media arts class we get to use the XL1... but the GL1 is nice.

Well, I missed out on the GL1. After a load of research, each has its advantages and disadvantages. I'll go with whichever I see a good deal for first.

vx1000 all the way just got one and it is excellent and i think sony makes better video cameras then cannon

i'd go for the GL1, but why not spurge for a GL2? They're selling for 1000-1400 on craigslist.

Anyhow don't go for the VX1000. It has no LCD screen, and it's the oldest miniDV cam on the market. You really want to be careful buying old video equipment as it will eventually start to break. I'd be careful with the GL1 as well if you go that route.

No.

Almost any camera now can trump the VX1000 in almost any respect.  They were good 10 years ago.  Now they're outdated.  I don't know what "other setups" you're comparing it to but it doesn't stand a chance against the standard higher level consumer and prosumer cameras nowadays.  HV30, GS500, GL2, VX2000/2100, DVX, XL1, XL2, FX7 etc = better.

And I don't like fisheyes.  Maybe for skating, but skiing = usually yuck.

Sorry I have a preference for more "raw" looking footage.  Sure, you could throw a FX-7 on a dolly and get that sick shot everyone now a days flips out over, but if you give a good filmer a nice fish setup, they can  produce some amazing lines.  And yeah, I'm talking about skating.

There are some pretty good prices on VX2000/2100's out there right now, so you could bide your time and snipe one off ebay, but I guess it depends on your budget.

I prefer the Sony myself, but mostly because that's what I learned on.

Also, a decade old it may be, but it's not as if it will shoot poor footage. Sure it won't be pure 1080i HD eye-popping chroma-porn, like on an RFX or something, but the bang for your buck is still in your favour.

That's always the good thing about when new models are released. Instant savings on the previous models, giving us amateurs some real quality gear.

skate filmers like the vx1000 because it's cheap and produces nearly decent quality video. It is however a terribly obsolete camera that really shouldn't even be considered an option for people searching for cameras these days, ESPECIALLY now that the FX7 is only 2000$

I just lost so much respect for you man.  That's such an erroneous statement.  At least respect the way other people do things.  I'm assuming all you look for in a film is slow mo dolly shots, I guess deviation from the way everything is being done lately is whack.

Hahaha. Thank you asian_allen. Honestly skateboard movies are cool and all, but i would never watch one for the cinematography. Skate filmers are a joke in the world of moviemaking.

im not hatin on fully flared and or you but fully flared is wayyyyyyyy overated. all they did was throw in a few extra hd slomo shots and some lifestyle shots, and they tried to make it more dramatic with alll some indie songs. and honestly the skating was good but there are better videos talent wise ex. ride the sky, and now. especially ride the sky.

i agree with you that some skate filming is pretty stupid.

but the vx1000 isnt all that bad theres a guy in my town that i think sure knows how to use his with skating.

Um the intro of fully flaired was shot with hvx, no other camera could produce that high quality of a shot at that slow of a speed. They probably used slo mo programs even with the hvx to make it slower and better looking. You need to step away from the video stuff and stick with the still stuff. I've seen many quality posts about still cameras from you, but some of your video posts in this thread have been terrible.

With 60p and twixor you can make up to about 120 and make it look good, i personally can't but i know someone who could. But regardless, i don't like agreeing with allen but i do time to time and i agree with him when i say skate filming is nothing special. Yes i like dollys and cranes, i dont necessarily like slow mo, but i like it when it looks like the filmer actually tried to make a shot look good. Not just move it up and down, not a zoom pan, and not following someone with a death lens, which honestly you could give to a 5 year old girl and she wouldnt miss the shot with a death lens.


I have no comment with this whole vx debate but it is a very old camera, this whole shit show started because some idiot bumped an old ass thread. This shit should just die.

After watching the intro for the second time, definitely couldn't be done with an hvx, but you could do something close. For some reason in my head it wasn't that slow.


Another note on fully flared, ty evans is real good as cgi/aftereffects/or whatever he used to make the explosions.
