Wirelss Network Connection HELP

I just bought a buddies laptop from him and after reformatting and reinstalling all the drivers and whatnot I am finding it impossible to connect to the wireless network in my apartment. I have the most recent update for the wireless adapter driver. I can see all the available wireless networks and when I try to connect to the one for my apartment it says "Limited or no connectivity." I have tried repairing the connection but when I do that it can't complete repairing. It stops while trying to "Renewing your IP address." I'm thinking that is the problem. Anyone have any idea on what is up? Any help would be great because it's kinda useless without the internet for now. THANKS

maybe the signal isnt strong enough for the card to pick it up. try using another card, or try the old card out on a new computer.

signal is 5/5 bars. and the adapter/card is built-in so i can't exactly change it with ease. don't even know how. but i am sure it isn't that because it worked fine until the reformat. wish i never reformatted it...

I woudl think about restarting your wireless router, and then the computer. Also (not sure if possible) but put in manual configurations for the IP from a desktop or something. Cause in order to connect to my wireless network we have to put a flash drive into the computer to format to the wirelses network settings.

i have restarted the router and the computer after updating stuff. how would you put in manual configs for the ip from a desktop or other computer?

what I am trying to say is...if you have a wired computer to that router you can see your IP config and what not, I am not sure where I am going with this...You may want to try the routers help website...for example i have a lnyxsis router...try there troubleshooter or stumthing

did the router come with any software where you can access and change settings? do u know the IP address of your network?

the internet at this apartment complex has always been messed up. the router in each apartment was installed by the apartment owners so we have no manuals or papers for them. i'm at the linksys site right now reading.

were the other wireless connections locked? if not, try logging into those. right now, im on my neighbours signal... mine isnt that good from up in my room so i just bum off theirs.

when i first got my laptop, it didnt work either... it said the limited or no connectivity as well. i forget but i think i renewed my ip adress, search it. it went to an old,sort of DOS like screen and it changed my ip address. it works now

search limited or no connectivity in google and youll get results on solutions. thats what i did

the other connections are all locked. i can pick up about 15 from other apartments. how did you renew your ip address? i'll do some googling now.

well it sounds like your problem has to do with your ip address, i was having similar problems when i tried to configure my computer to play a game that required it. in the midst of changing my settings to have a static ip (an ip address that does not change) i fucked something up, and i was in the same situation, i could see my network at full strength but it stopped connecting at 'acquiring ip address'. Well i have windows vista on my laptop so i can't tell you how to get to your network settings, but make sure that you have 'acquire ip address automatically' and 'obtain server dns address automatically', in vista these options are under wireless networking properties -> internet protocol version 4 properties. good luck let me know if that works.

google u have a lot of tutorials for these things. Just reinstal ur connection programe with all the password, ip and usernames

does anyone know what a Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are? or what numbers would work as those?

i jsut went to website that gave me the ip address for my desktop. i copied that into the laptop as the static ip address to connect to. after making up some other numbers and clicking ok, i managed to CONNECT to the network. however i still can't go to any sites. i'll try loggin off then back on to get a different ip with this comp. can two computers have the same IP address?

have you checked the setting of the linksys router. Go to http://192.168.1.1/ for the settings. Make sure wireless capabilities are enabled. But since your running through a router your ip address will change from the standard xx.xx.xxx.xxx to a local ip address. 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.49. That is what you'll use for the laptop.

thats the default stuff, but the person who set it up may have changed it.
