Depends what you're into. If you'll be doing alot of media work (Photoshop, vid editing, etc.) get an iMac. They have superior displays and take up no space (the whole computer is desktop...no tower). Hot!

he was asking for a laptop not a desktop lol

dell xps's are dope. hp's are fucking sick too, but i hear they cost A LOT and are difficult to fix since you can only buy hp parts. umm, toshibas are good aswell
if youre wanting to spend a lot, get an alienware, mmmm

Oops. The point I was making was in reference to the guy above who was saying to get a Mac. I was just saying Mac if you are interested in graphic art and such. Mac makes laptops too...Lol.

get a mac and if you want to run windows on it just get bootcamp. it's the best of both worlds.

actually some of the newer macs have over heating problems (laptop ones), by the way check out the site tigerdirect.com and slickdeals.com for cheap laptops. also try newegg. just set a price range and look into whats available and decide.

dont buy a dell. they're customer service blows. they trick you with warranties.whenever you call them for something, you get some lady in india and you end up saying "what was that?" or "can you say that again?" a dozen times. i wont buy from them again...
i'd go with a sony or toshiba

similar situation...i needed a computer for college this fall, and decided to get a macbook pro and absolutely love it. they are an expensive option, but it has yet to dissappoint me so far. Plus, if you buy it now with your student discount, you get $200 off the computer, a free printer and ipod with rebate, which is a pretty sweet deal.

Just get a customized Dell Inspiron, macs are overpriced for the power you get.
For under $1000 I got a laptop with:
-2 gigabytes of RAM
-256 megabyte ATI x1400 graphics card
-120 gigabyte hard drive
-1.86 gigahertz core Duo processor
-DVD burner
Its nowhere near as powerful as a Dell XPS or Mac Powerbook 2, however for less than $1000 I can run vista and games (like Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion on high visual settings) flawlessly.
