Honestly, on the presidential ballot, all that needs to be there is "Rudy Giuliani - Republican", "Barack Obama - Democratic", and two check boxes. Mark the one you want. Add names for independents who are on the ballot obviously, but it's pretty simple. Check boxes, anyone can fill out.

haha, like that will happen, though we DO need socialized healthcare badly, depends on who's president and if they get reelected, as i can't see that happening in the first 4 years of whoever wins. americans are really stupid in general about stuff like this as they think how it affects them that instint, and all they see is a tax increase.

America needs a lot of things. The WORLD needs a lot of things. Texaco just bought the rights to a new form of battery that would allow electric cars to function roughly twice as efficiently... so that it will never ever be used by anyone or produced for any car and thereby threaten oil revenues. It's hard to know where to start when it comes to the question of "how to fix things", and most of the solutions can't be implemented, because you don't get elected by telling people you're going to rock the boat. It scares them.

mhm... but universal healthcare is just so hard to fathom considering all the dough america doesnt have but has been dishing out for geriatric care, everyone is opposed to tax cuts.. but ive got a friend who had no health insurance and has been paying off a med bill for years. thats why i am happy to be an expatriot. with health care..... luckily.

But even THEN it doesn't happen, because Congress DOES need to worry about reelection, as does the senate, and the party needs to maintain a long-term image. It's about reelection and ultimately money, and that's it. Always do just enough not to piss anybody off, because a pissed off someone will vote for the other guys. Look at the Republicans distancing themselves from Bush on immigration, for example. It just isn't going to happen. Socialized health care needs to start implementation the first day a dem is sworn in in 09, with a dem majority in the house and senate. If it's made a priority and funded fully, it'll happen. The problem are the dem reps who are in tough districts and will split with the white house because their constituents might lean republican over the issue.

The thing is, about the electric cars, the politics of the whole thing is fucking the industry in its ass. Right now if you pay 108,000 dollars you can order a Tesla Motors roadster (their ordering is a bit backed up due to a glut of ominous popularity), which is sleek and attractive, does 0-60 in under 5 seconds, has a 300+ horsepower capacity, a range of about 500km and an overnight charge time. They can do that NOW for a hundred G's. If they refine that technology (and there are lots of people working on it; look into what PLM does with Austin Minis: 600+ horsepower and a 900km range, fully electric), a few years from now, you'll be able to get it for 40 grand. Then 30. Suddenly everyone buys electric, the internal combustion engine is all but obsolete, gas stations, mechanics, auto manufacturers, and god knows how many other industries are completely fucked. Thousands lose their jobs. Financial markets are in chaos. We're talking potentially worse than the depression. And why? Because of a delay of the inevitable: instead of allowing the market to naturally and gradually shift to the newly available product, whereby we phase in the electric, hydrogen etc cars and phase out gas over a period of decades (should've started around 1995 or possibly sooner), the oil companies hold everything back for as long as possible, make millions as long as possible, and then allow the dam to burst.

So yeah... the world really is fucked, Landis. More than you even realize.

myself indirectly and my whole family directly is from budapest.  many of whom still live there.  through whom i've heard the same thing.  it's insane how many americans are totally clueless about what's going on with current events.  i'll bet you could walk around downtown in any big city and find people who couldn't tell you who the current president is.  the state of the union is a disaster.

Not that any of this matters what so ever since Dec. 21, 2012 marks the end of the world as we know it anyways.  Damn multiple ancient prophecies pointing to the same time for the end of the world.  If Rudy gets elected, I guess I can see how it'll end...lots and lots of nukes.

That's my hope, to at least expose people to what's going on.  The ignorance in this country is what hurts us the most, so sharing my opinion (and what I believe is the overwhelming opinion of the people in this country and the world) with anyone was unaware of it before is a little bit of what I can do to try and fix that problem.

my family is from a small town outside of Mastrict in Holland, but my grandparents moved to wisconsin when my dad was a little boy. but i still have many relatives over in the motherland.

In 1970 we had cars that achieved 50mpg regularly. They were not pretty, they were not fast, but they easily did it. Existing technology without the use of hybrids could easily produce a 100mpg diesel or petrol car, however, the industry is paid off by big oil. Why does japan have the most efficient cars? Is it because their engineers are better and smarter? No, it's because Japanese auto producers are less tied to their energy industry. Tied, still, but less so.

Since the 1970s crisis, we lifted stringent efficiency regs, and what did the industry do? We went right from 50mpg in our economy models straight back to 20-30. Diesel is cleaner than ever, and produces more torque in small motors, yet for some reason, American law prohibits it. Sulfur content? This is hardly convincing~

There are obviously many problems currently with America as a whole, and for all my thoughts I can't envision a viable solution that wouldn't totally cripple the country~
