Replying to One seat cusion rule?

This is a question mostly for the guys.... My friend Nicole and I always go to the movies together and the last time we went these two guys sat like three rows in front of us, they came in together but didnt sit next to eachother.... we thought maybe the dates had gone to the bathroom or something but they never came.... then we were told by our boss and a few other guys that when two guys go see a movie theres a "one seat cusion rule" so it doesnt look gay but its okay for two girls to sit right next to eachother...

i was wondering if this was really true or if my boss is full of shit lol.
