No, I'm quite sure he was a police officer.. his shirt said POLICE on the back, and they aren't always in blue. Maybe he was in street patrol uniform.

soooo stupid. In my local city if you get caught grinding anything or doing anything that could cause destruction to the property. they will whrite your name down and if you get caught again they will take your board, and fine you or put you in the slammer for a bit. so gay. i mean ya mabey it chips of alittle paint or somthing but common why dont they spend more time with meth adicts or chasing speeders. Sooo gay!

1) only the people present know everything that happened. obviously, this was edited. opening the video up with the police officer choking the kid is going to spark a big reaction.

2) the skateboarders did provoke the cop. the kid ran, the cop obviously is going to chase him. the girl was mouthing off, the officer said "you're arrested too", and she tried to go away.

however, there was no need for the cop to resort to strangling, or throwing them down onto the sidewalk. the group did not respond violently, and the cop responded to them in a very inappropriate way.

3) i don't want to sound like i'm siding with the pohpoh but it was a town/city law for no skateboarding on the sidewalk. but i do agreee that there are much bigger things to worry about.

I hope that Officer Williams spends a lot of time in jail for this, and I believe his immediate firing is necessary, yet not the only penalty that should be imposed upon him and your police department. The only criminal action in this incident was taken by Officer Williams and not by the skateboarders. He choked a 13 year old boy and and teenage girl.

Dear Mr. Southard,

I am writing this after viewing the video posted on the above link. I usually stick up for the Police Departments when people call them 'pigs', but I have no excuse for what this officer did. I'm not a skateboarder, but the way they were treated alarmed (and disgusted) myself, and I'm sure hundreds of thousands of people who have seen this video. I think that your Police Dept. should spend more time catching criminals who rape children, murder innocent people, sell drugs, instead of 13 year old kids riding skateboards on 'Go Skateboarding Day'. I called the number and apparently the cop in question is on "administrative leave" and the incident is under investigation.  Hes going to get his ass handed to him.

Here's the thing. Police need to have the authority to use force to be effective. Officer William's use of force against nonviolence was pretty appalling but I don't think he deserves to go to jail for flipping out on a few teens. The thousands of people who've been calling and emailing the station is pretty good punishment even if the asshole doesn't lose his job. The national press and the chaos created at the Hot Springs Police Station in the next few weeks will make his life miserable for a while.

And another though: was the bike cop just watching the scene for entertainment value or something? Did he do anything??

"I have talked to a few of the shop owners. They were quiet clear in what they saw. Merchants Bobbie Golden and Jerry Milroy said Canterbury went after Williams and that Williams was just defending himself. The girl was hitting him and had her hands around his throat. The video on youtube has conveniently edited that part and others out.

IMO, the kids got exactly what they were looking for: TROUBLE"
