Weren't you the kid who used to know so much about video production? Anyways, quality is fine. One of the better low light cameras out there. I don't know what you are lookin for but I would definitely suggest this as a camera if you cannot manage to get the Panasonic.

haha its funny how your always spewing "knowledge". And asking a question like this. Do your research....Google! People on NS very rarely actually know about cameras. Alot of people just act like they do, try finding some website reviews from students that used the camera, or just basic film sites that have product feedback reviews. You'll get much better answers then you will on NS. For how much your going to spend, you should go HD or HDV. The reality of it is, everyone is moving to HD in some form or another, it increases your production quality, and in the long run is beneficial to your future if you wish to pursue filming ski movies, or being a freelance cinematographer. If you buy a camera like the VX2000, your buying a great camera, but its out dating. If you find yourself doing this for a living you'll find yourself having to drop 3-5 g's again very quickly to step up to HD.

Sorry Jeff, but I disagree. I know you know what you're doing cause you make some sick shit but I feel I must express my opinion on the subject as well.


I think HD is a great concept and all, but by investing in it at the moment, you're going to come up short.

How many people have 1080p televisions, HD cords, and HD DVD players?

Also, you would need an HVX or higher for it to be legit HD, then you would need a fucking souped up editing system that can handle the native 1080p format, then an HD DVD burner.

Say I skip the whole tv part and just down-convert to SD, it still won't look that great. The day NBC switched to an HD broadcasting network, I couldn't tell the difference between the SD broadcasted shows (the ones shot in 35mm) and the HD broadcasted versions, down-rezzed onto my SD tv. And no Im not using some little 20", I have a 40" flatscreen SD tv.


Nobody really has these things. The day my grandma gets a 1080p television, I will switch to HD.

in which case, I say it could be a good thing because whether or not it actually is real HD, it will continue to awe non-knowing average people, which is good in a market.

Tanaka, I hear what your saying, but still in the long run, with an editing suite like Final Cut Studio 2 out, and if you look at all of the major players in the ski film industry, they're atleast shooting with an HDV camera.

Level 1 shoots with the FX1, MSP shoots Super 16 and makes it HD, PBP shoots HD, T-3 Shoots with HDV/HD cams, as do nearly everyone else. I myself had 2 HD tv's when i lived in Colorado, and most people i know actually own one. Having HD/HDV camera doesnt mean you have to make your movie only HD DVD's, but it steps up your video quality a ton, and gives you so many more capabilities for projects and distribution of your footage.

Yeah HD looks good no doubt, but this while HDV thing, eeeeeeh Im kinda sketched out on it. sure its more res, but its interlaced res and de-interlacing it involves artificial fields doesnt it?


I dont know, its a personal thing. Like I can't stand watching Level 1 movies because of the camera Berman uses, and now it seems T3, and Rage have gone down that road as well. Im not saying they're bad filmmakers, because they are very talented but I personally don't believe its HD unless its progressive.

Like I LOVE watching MSP's footage, the super16 is to die for; thats a perfect example of really good looking down-rezzed footage. But when I see Bermans footage I really can't tell if its a vx2000 or an FX1.

on a sidenote, my opinion is pretty biased because I am the kind of person who would rather watch super8 than HVX footage.

I do agree with you though on the interlaced res, which i personally cant stand interlacing at all. which is why im not a fan of the fx 1, because for the price you can get a less expensive fx-7 that is progressive. to me, the HVX, and V1U produce some of the most legitamate quality you can buy, and with editing studios, hdtv's, hd dvd players are becoming more and more popular and progressively less expensive, its definetly the route to go.

but everyone has there own opinion on what video is, and how it should truly look... haha so nobodys wrong.

Open Water was filmed with vx's it was a nation wide release. Grizzly Man was shot with vx's too.

yeah, but you also have to know how to shoot with it to actually acheive that quality. i'd highly reccomend that you buy some sort of book for a camera you get, or buy it now and start playing with it, and visiting camera/action sports websites to pick up filming styles, and how they shoot.

yeah thats the one thing i really dont like about level 1's movies, the footage looks crappy, i dont think its just the camera either, ive seen some much better looking footage from an fx1. i think it looks worse than high five when he used a pd150, and i thought that footage looked pretty shitty for a pd150 too. i guess its how he sets up the camera and edits.
