FLAC to iTunes?

i just downloaded a torrent, but it is in FLAC, and when i try to drag it to iTunes it wont let me. anyone know what i can do?

what you need is a program called flac frontend. it's free and i'll dig up the link in a minute.

If your on a Mac for some reason. Get the program called xACT. Its so freakin helpful. Convert them to AIFF's and then you can play them in ITunes and convert them to MP3 if you want.

I use frontend. Decode them to wav files so that they don't lose sound quality. It'll be a big file, though.

Bump. Does anyone know of a free program that converts from FLAC to MP3? I've been using FLAC Frontend and it's nice and all, but I don't like how songs end up being like 40mb a piece. I tried iTunes's AAC encoding and I don't like how much it distorts the songs.

My $20 headphones/playing my iPod through my car tapedeck isn't high enough quality to hear a difference between 320 kbps MP3 and FLAC. Plus I'd rather not void my warranty by installing rockbox on my iPod just to play them.

Still don't know how to import or add FLAC to iTunes so as to open and play FLAC in iTunes? Still trying to convert FLAC to iTunes more compatible audio formats like FLAC to MP3, FLAC to WAV, M4A, AIFF, AAC, Apple Lossless format, etc? If this is the case, follow the detailed guide and you'll find an answer.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), as its name suggested, is a free lossless audio codec. FLAC can compress audio to about 50~60% without any quality loss. This format has been widely accepted by many Hi-Fi systems and audiophiles.

Unfortunately, Apple's software and devices, like iTunes, QuickTime, iPad, iPhone, iPod, don't support FLAC format.

To open and play FLAC in iTunes, a recommended solution is converting FLAC to iTunes recognized audio formats like MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, etc at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/flac-to-itunes.html

iTunes is actually one of the best mp3 encoders out there, if you want tiny 10 mb audio files then its your best bet. The file size is a product of the compression, so the smaller they get the worse they sound (basically). The reason your FLAC files are gigantic when you uncompress them is that you're uncompressing them to the original file size on the CD or whatever.

If you want great sound quality but smaller file sizes look into converting them to ALAC (apple's version of FLAC which works on all apple devices), or convert them to 320 kbps MP3s (good enough for your $20 headphones). 320s still sound great and chances are you can move up a few price ranges in terms of your listening equipment before you really notice that the mp3 compression is taking away from your listening experience.
