I'm taking a cross country roadtrip next summer, starting in New York. This trip is a promise I made to a friend before his deployment to Afghanistan. So heres the question....what places do you guys feel would be the best places to stop and see during this trip? Absolutly anywhere in continental US is doable, we plan on being on the road for at least 2 months.
Arches is sick. Also stop in canyonlands. Other places to do/see:
Drive 101 from Los Angeles to the Olympic Penninsula in WA.
Redwood's National Park
Joshua Tree
Death Valley
Olympic National Rainforest
Mt Rainier National Park
Hells Canyon, WA
Crater Lake, OR
Drive up to Alta from Salt Lake city, amazing canyon!
Grand Banks off NC (take the small ferries around, see cape Hatteras!)
Drive to Juneau via the coast from Vancouver
Go boating in Bodega Bay
I would avoid the south altogether pretty much (except for the coast of the carolina's).
Chicago, International Falls, Take the Lake Michigan Circle tour stops in Chicago, Milwaukee, Marquatee MI Green Bay WI Grand Rapids etc, i did it one weekend, such cool sites.
drive through the rockies, see all the things,
South Dakota, wall drug, and the monument in the mountain (drawing a blank)
St Louis, Drive up the Missippi River, N.O. to MPLS,
^^i think he means mount rushmore......also dont forget the grand canyon theres that new glass skywalk thing that might be worth however much it costs (i think its like 15 bucks)
Check out Yosemite, Tahoe, Crater Lake, and the California and AZ deserts. You'll probably have to anyway.. if you're traveling down Interstate 80 or 5 through oregon and California.
Well you can come pick me up ill pitch out gas money....and i dont smell so thats a plus too im in Bozeman Montana you will have to come here anyways for our sweet ski hills here!
i definatly second or third Arches national park in Moab utah. that area of the desert is amazing. ive spent alot of time biking there, its seriously like being on a different planet.
but along with that, Bryce caynon, Zion, the badlands, Black hills, dunes of michigan, those are some of my favs. ive never been to CA, or spent TOO much time up in the northwest, but its a cool area definatly worth going to.
and you GOT to go to wall drug. its the dumbest place on earth, but if your diving across the country, it is literally required. (and youll understand y once you start driving)
places i think are overrated:
grand caynon, its big, but not that pretty.
yellowstone, its definatly cool, but its sooooo Touristy, theyve pretty much destroyed it.
i was also considering a little trip next summer (2008) before college, but i'm gonna have to start saving for gas now.
there's really sooo much to do and so little time, but watching the travel channel on nights when there's nothing else on really helps. sorry i can't help much because i too am looking for info, but i'd try other travel forums and ask people who have done cross country trips before.
haha...im expanding this to include random entertaining shit, since I just got done talking to my friend and he insists we go to the Jelly Belly factory in California
He also insists we buy a shot glass at every place we stop and then have a shot from all of them once we get back (he's a little pissed that he just turned 21 and cant drink in Afghanistan)
There is no doubt in my mind that you are white, rich, and crazy. So here's my advice if I were you:
I would get the fuck out Miami, smoke a few blunts... sip a few margheritas... mack on some bitches. You know the deal. Then head over to Chicago... get drunk with the high class people. Last but not least, take that private jet to Las Vegas, risk it all on texas hold 'em and get married to multiple people in the same night.
Or if you like bushes and berries and that kinda shit...
well that sucks for you.

that's a pretty good list there rowen, but how on earth can you drive from vancouver to juneau? i imagine youd almost certainly have to inland (just to get to skagway, which would be sick) or take the ferry.
anyway, some others:
north cascades national park (if youre interested in the best hiking/backpacking in the lower 48)
crater lake, as mentioned
glacier national park
oysterville if you dig oysters
fallingwater; its the shit
getty
yosemite
san juan islands
vancouver, bc is worthy and close to washington
badlands (only if youre going through south dakota)
