Hey hey hey.. slow down homie..
I'm not saying asians DONT do extracurricular, I'm just saying a lot of them are focused on school primarily, and perhaps music secondary... which most colleges just see as another academic discipline.
Its a cultural thing really. Sports and other high end extracurriculars are not always on the list of things to do.
We are talking about UC Berkeley here... UC Berkeley gets so many apps in every year, that they have the ability to pick and choose who they want. They are going to choose the most active people thaty can find. People who not only have an insanely high GPA, but also people who are extremely passionate about something other than school.
For example, my cousin had a 4.4 gpa out of high school. Top 1% of latina students in the country. Didnt get into Cal. She didnt really have any other extracurricular activity on record other than traveling, playing guitar, and volenteer work at her church. She got into NYU instead. Not bad.
Meanwhile... my friend Lo DID get into Cal. She was a 2 sport athlete with a 3.85 gpa. She skiied, did theatre performances, volenteer work at the theatre, etc etc etc.
This is how many of the UC schools are like. UCSF, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, and UCSB are all very much like this.
Davis, Riverside, Irvine, Merced are less focused on extracurricular activities, and more on academic prowace. That doesnt say they arent good schools that merely says that they are not as desirable to go to.. most likely because of locaction (All the other UC's are located ON the ocean Location.location.location)
With all that said, any UC is a good place to go to school. They all have pros that outweigh the cons, and they have awesome educational records. Dont let the asians scare you... asians are abundant at ANY college...
Oh, and unless you go to UCSC, UCSB, and UCSD, (where you would be right on the ocean, and be able to surf all year instead) you're going to be within 3.5 hours of tahoe, or within an hour or two of Bear Mountain/Baldy/Mthigh.
FIN.
