Ok deeep question.
I'm an atheist myself but if I had to choose one faith it would be Buddhism. if we were all Buddhists there wouldn't be so much shit happening in the world!

if the morals of religion where truly upheld, such as thou shal not kill etc. then there would be no war, we would all be rediculously polite, perfect world and the lot. How ever this is clearly never ever going to be the case, people ignoring religious ideals is the cause for wars really, but then again thats responsible for most of whats wrong in the world. now im in no place to criticise, i myself am a athiest also! but i think its misinterpretation of religions that lead to contributing factors to war, i.e. 9/11. but wars can happen easily with out religion, for example the world wars didn't start for religious reasons, its human nature for war to happen aka greed.

^911 happened because, as Ron Paul said, "We have been over there, bombing them for 10 years." I think our foreign policy is the reason that they came over here, religion was just used as a tool to get more followers.
That said, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, and Pot were all atheist dictators who killed literally hundreds of millions of people. (Yes Hitler was Atheist, I hate how people try to argue that.) Oh and lets not forget the amount of people who died in the wars that these guys started. When the death toll of people with religion can even compare to the numbers that these people brought, I may change my view that religion does not kill people, unless it is used as a tool when used in the wrong context.
Religion is not to blame for hatred and war, it is mostly to blame for forgiveness and ending wars.

When did I say it didn't? Does it really matter what the original reason is? No, its a fun topic to discuss but it wont do us any good in the big scheme of things. There are a lot of fucked up people out there who want to kill us, and theres nothing we can do to make em change their minds.
And the guy that said I over simplified it....
There isnt a lot to simplify here. Did government cause it, maybe, religion, maybe. It doesnt really matter. You can argue all you want, the bottom line is that these people are fucked up beyond our understanding. We cant reason with them, we may never understand their motives.

but really religion isn't the main cause of war and suffering in the world. It's greed and money. Nationalism and desire for power. People feeling they need to push their own (obviously superior) views on other people. Religion can often get involved in war and fuel it more. I mean if it weren't for religion there wouldn't be conflicts over isreal, however the majority of war is due to cocky people who are intollerant of others views

religion has been the major backbone for almost every war in history. the reason some, eh most, wars occur is because some corrupt guy interprets their religious goal wrong. hence in the islamic world, the quran(butchered that) says to do one major thing, but the recent radicalists interpret it as ridding the world of all other religions by any means possible. therefore its ok to walk into a public coffee shop and blow up innocent women and children, just because 2 americans are in there. its a corrupt religion that keeps shifting its ideals further and further away from the truth.

Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin did not believe in a god (don't try to say Hitler did, he did not). So, political power and money usually are the things to start wars and death (the exception would be Hitler who really believed in the Arian race and wanted what he thought was best for Germany).
So I really think that even including religion is not fair when you look at the biggest dictators of all time.
btw: has anyone noticed how the "rastafarians" ruined ns thinkers? just look at the last topics. uhh.

shut up isn;t really an appropriate response since i wasn;t talking and making noise. my response to the original question was in written form - ie- no noise. if you don;t like my response - fine but say that, not shut up- which as mentioned doesn;t make sense, given the context. (if however you had to read my response aloud to understand it then you could say shut up to yourself as in that situation you'd be the one making the noise.)
