okay i have a 93 jeep cherokee 4.0l h.o. and when i go to start it first all the lights and radio will come on and when i turn the key to start it doesnt do anything, but i hear a slight sound from the fuse box i thought for a while i was going to have to buy a new starter for it.im wondering if anyone elce has had this problem before and could give me some advice.the starter will start the motor if i go directly to the starter with booster cables.
sounds kind of like what happened to my brothers car i think? his was the alternator was dead. i dont really know anything about cars though so thats my guess.
wammy bro try this. open up the hood and jiggle all the cords that have connectors on them. im not a car expert but my dad knows how to build all sorts of cars from the ground up. i have a 1990 jeep cherokee 4 cylinder too. jiggle all those cables and push the connectors together. hopefully that works cus otherwise i have no clue...
he has a 4.0L not a 4cylinder. but either way, it wouldnt hurt to try. take a hammer and bang the starter lightly while someone is crankin the engine over. if you get under oyur xk the starter is by the passenger side front wheel, you cant miss it.
is the noise like a clickclickclickclick and it won't start? that happened to my cherokee and i had to replace the computer. it's a pretty easy fix. find a used one from a junk yard or something and buy the wiring harness from autozone.
if you hear a sort of clicking then the starter would be a good place to start. Alternator maybe but when mine have failed there have been other warning signs besides the car just not wanting to start... the car starts losing power and going crazy.
