i'm ideally looking to spend 600-700. in terms of style , i don't really care so long as it's nothing too radical. either way, i play alot of old rock and metal songs, i.e, iron maiden, van halen, ozzy, that sort of sound.
any advice? (on pickups especially) i've heard good things about emg's and duncan's but have personally never tried either make. i've been eyeing various esp guitars for a while - they seem pretty affordable and have pretty good hardware too. i'm also just looking to stick to a regular 22 fret 24'75" guitar
as for amps, i'm not looking to go crazy. i know they can be quite pricy and i'm only a garage-type jammer. 30 watts would be plenty, although i'll push 50. would finding a used amp on ebay be a good idea? also, keep in mind that i love a heavy, yet clean distortion and a smooth rock sound. again, any advice at all would be great.
cheers

you probably already know this but the best thing to do is go to a shop and try stuff out for yourself.
then say youll think about it-go home and buy the guitar you liked off ebay. thats how i got my strat.
as for amps get one second hand somewhere-ebays good though postage can be alot. when i knew nothing i blew £150 on a new roland cube where as i could have looked around and got a nice second hand marshall laney etc. for around that price

get a gibson les paul or the epiphone equivelant and a marshall amp get a good marshall though because the lesser ones are shit. and get mad effects pedals. then you'll be set to play mad maiden and sabbath rifs
good luck

i would get something with a slim neck..maybe an ibanez rg, or you could be a baller and get the sz series, they play fast and low, sound so good too. for an amp buy any random 30-50watt amp, just get a pedal like metalzone for dist.

As a guy who mixes sound on a weekly basis, the amp makes the guitar and vice versa. If either half of the situation is shitty, the whole thing will suck. The Les Paul epiphone sounds pretty much amazing. Kicks the shit out of a Strat. Beyond that, I can't offer much advice.

Epiphone les paul or SG will suit your style of play and are good guitars under your budget. Once you get an amp as well you probably wont have enough dosh for custom pickups tho.

meh personnal opinion. depends what strat and what your into but for this particular music genre a les paul would probably suit better, personnally i find the epiphone not so good, just felt more like a rythm guitar.

i have an epiphone lp and love it, got a good deal for it new on ebay. i also got my amp on ebay - a crate 65 watt that cost me $100 including shipping...the thing retails for like over $400! pretty much the best deal i've ever found on ebay. the two sound really good together too.
so yeah, scoping out ebay for a while isn't a bad idea.

Vox makes some good amps for reasonable prices. Also, for guitars, check out Yamaha and Ibanez, both have some high quality guitars for under 400.

For the amp i would definatly recommend a VOX amp. I got the 15 watt and its pretty good. Sounds good at low volumne or high. Not Cluttered sounding at high volume. Even though i have a crap squire strat.
My good friend has the Vox in a 30 watt. Is much louder and sounds great. The vox amps have many different types of affects to. I think mine has like nine different affects by turning the knob. He has a Epiphone AlleyCat. Its basically a Ephiphone Les Paul but its a semi hollow body. But the VOX and the Ephiphone sound great.
DON'T BUY!!!!!!! A Marashal amp that is 30 Watts or under. I don't know how the bigger ones sound My freind bought the Marshal 30 watt amp and it sucked. It only had three different affects. The marshall sounded so cluttered, jumbled sounding that and you couldn't hear anything if you were picking notes or soloing. It did sound good if you only played chords. But absolutley terrible if anything else. I bought the 15 watt VOX from him because he wanted the new Marshall. He ended up taking the marshall back that week and getting a the 30 watt amp.
Sorry for the length but just wanted to give some suggestions

get an ESP with dual EMG humbuckers. 24 frets, not 22. locking tuners. and amp wise, if you have the money get a Krank combo amp. otherwise go with a Line 6 Spider II. If the ESP is too much go for an Ibanez with all the above accessories. you wont be dissapointed.

i got an epiphone SG literally like 5 days ago, and the epiphone "firecracker" tube amp, which i fuckin love. just go with whatever sound you want, they have some really high-tech amps nowadays with built in metronomes and shit, but personally, i like the old tube amp sound, and just get a guitar that you feel comfortable with and like
