Camping on the beach

I'm trying to plan a trip with some friends to go chill out on a beach somewhere in june. My main problem right now is trying to decide if we should just pop a tent on the beach or if i should make reservations at a campground on the beach. We're all from central new york, so im looking for an east coach beach in CT, MD, or possibly the Delaware Water Gap. has anyone had any experience with camping on a beach on the east coast? any suggestions or advice? thanks.

ive camped at a campsite on the beach

it was fucking sick

definitely reccomend doing it


i just dont know about heading out to a random beach and poppin up a tent. possibility you could get fucked over by the po/owners of the beach, but i dont really know because ive never tried

i'm going to CT in june as well stay on my uncle's yacht.

anyways... it depends on the beach. some beaches there are homeless people on them at night and isn't the best idea to just put up a tent but other beaches are different.

I went on a two week kayak trip along north/south carolina last summer and stayed on little islands and beach's. I used a tent and it was great. didnt have any problems with people or beach patrol. A few night the wild horse's kept coming up to the tent. Other than that it was amazing.

If it's windy bury some logs or other heavy objects and tie strings to them and attach that to the base of the tent to keep it from flying off. Keep in mind whether it's high or low tide to avoid waking up in water. In short, don't camp too close to the ocean. If it's lightning don't pitch a tent in the middle of an empty beach. Have fun.

Well if there are dunes you should set your tent behind them because they will block the wind for you. Usually campgrounds aren't directly on the beach(like you don't get ou of the tent walk 5 steps then go swimming) but they offer services wich can be pretty helpful. I'ts as you want, if you're prepared the beach can be the best option. Oh and also look for state laws on camping and making fire on the beach.

The Delmarva Penninsula DE/MD/VA ocean front does not have any permitted camping on the beach.  There is Camp Henelopen State Park (Delaware) - but you need to call ahead to reserve. There is also Assateague Isaland National Seashore that has primitive camping that you need to get a permit for.   There is also tent camping with facilities but here again, call to reserve.

All of the beaches are patrolled in the summer and you will get caught if you try.  The Jesey beaches are even more restrictive.  There is a ton of information via the internet via google and the aforementioned parks.

If you should decide to do this it will be a trip you will never forget whether it be good or bad.  Please don't think you can take a tent and sleeping bag. Just like skiing be prepared and have some skills.

You can find me down there nearly every weekend May thru Oct.

yea, ive been looking a lot at assateague. i found some interesting articles for nudists telling them to go up the beach  a ways so they dont bother people, but beach patrol wont care. any idea what's north of the park and if its possible to camp there?

Is there still a big senior week at ocean city? where do people stay for that?



i also heard that mystic, CT has free beach camping, anyone have any info on that? thanks a ton so far, this is reall helpful

hahaha   senior week in OC MD  there are billions of hotel rooms. 

Assateague Island is a federal park.  there are no nudists there I can assure you.  I have a Off Road vehicle permit to drive on the beach there. I know the whole island very well.

you seem to know quite a bit about camping and beaches. you say i should be prepared and not just bring a tent and sleeping bag, what things should I know? I've already considered and thought about tide and i dont plan on having any beach fires in areas im not supposed to. what should i know so i dont make a big mistake somewhere?

in mexico the goverment owns all the beachs so you can camp anywhere you want... but you might want to carry a gat if you do

assateague is the place to go if you ask me. We did it last year and it was park in the lot, permits are 10 bucks and you can stay up to 7 days for that price, it was first come first serve so get there early in the day. You camp on the dunes and could literally throw a rock to the ocean(if there were rocks around. It was BACKCOUNTRY camping, thats what you have to ask for cause there are campgrounds there too, the only problem is you can't be a sissy cause you have to hike in to your camp and carry some wood or rely on driftwood(you could probably rely on drift wood honestly). From the parking to the first side is like 2 miles walk. Also ask for oceanside camping cause they have bay side as well. You can light campfires on the beach below the high tide mark it's perfectly legal. Bring LOTS of bugspray cause the horseys are nice for pictures but i think they attract all the black flies.

You may want to call ahead and ask how full backcountry camping is right now, this may give you an idea of how full it is. I was blown away at the price of ten bucks, and its good for a week or just one day you just have to tell em how long your staying. Just don't think your gonna drive right up to your oceanside camping cause they sounded pretty strict about making you carry in all your gear, but its only like 2 miles. I carried in all my gear, wood, and fishing rod with bait in a cooler, it was tough.

Thanks for the help you gave me last year papa you can check the pics above to see how it went. I am now looking to get a little more into the surf fishing, just how much was that off road permit to drive on down there?? We walked past a lot of fishermen there and it looked like a really good time to drive in and fish there. Plus it's only like a 4 1/2 hour drive which isn't too bad. I also wanna roll the yota over some sand, never done that before :)
