the houston chronicle has a circulation of over half a million people and is the largest paper in houston and the 9th largest in the united states. i'd say that qualifies as mainstream.

I could have sworn that you were the one who brought the topic of Guiliani up. For the record, Guiliani isn't even my favorite candidate. As for staying out of the Ron Paul thread, is this thread a fan club, or is a place where open discussion is allowed and encouraged? Because if it's a fan club then (a)you don't have very loyal fans, and (b)I don't want a part in it anyway. I have not the slightest shred of fear of Ron Paul. Not because I think that he would lead the country in the completely wrong direction: because he would. I do not fear Ron Paul because I know that he won't even have the opportunity to lead the country in the wrong direction because he will not be nominated and he will not be elected.

Conceptkid, if you make a political thread and arent prepared to deal with the just criticism that ALWAYS appears on NS, get the fuck off the site.

Just by conceptkid's sheer arrogance and ignorance, he is really turning people off to Ron Paul.

Here's a tip for you: Try seeing the other people in this thread as human beings. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't make them a brainwashed lemming. While we're on the subject, I might point out that you have not addressed a response also by cottonwood, that stated that Ron Paul ran for president in 1988, not in the 70's. Did you get pwned as well, conceptkid? I most certainly don't believe that there is no power to change the course of time. That said, it doesn't mean that anything is possible. Not anything is possible. If you haven't figured that out yet, then you have life full of disappointment ahead of you. of course he's going to be on the front page of a texas newspaper because he's from texas. it's true he's gaining plenty of popularity, and i'm happy for him, he's the best repub candidate out there. but wait until other big papers endorse him before you claim he's coming out huge.

this thread is entirely too long so as it is, and therefore i couldnt make it all the way through the 350 some odd posts thus far, but from what i had read, no one has really mentioned paul's environmental policies. he's basically against anything relating to lowering greenhouse gasses, upping emissions and mileage standards for cars, and cleaning up our environment. he doesn't support the kyoto protocol and is not opposed to drilling in ANWR. as someone who thoroughly enjoys the outdoors and all the wildlife and scenery this country has to offer, i don't really go along with his views in that respect. also, not wanting to up mpg standards on domestic vehicles is ludicrous. the japanese are kicking our asses in pretty much all aspects of automobile production, and by not raising CAFE standards, it sets the US automakers that much farther behind because they are not forced to compete with a product that is already superior to theirs. he's basically stifling innovation by not forcing companies to create better products.

no, what's he's opposed to is the government FORCING those kinds of environmental regulations.

there's a video somewhere where he talks about his views on the environmental issues and basically says that it should be up to the private sector to regulate. he talks about the cleaning up of the hudson river (in the 70s i think) that was accomplished with virtually no governmental involvement. instead, private citizens organized and filed lawsuits against companies that were polluting and thus potentially damaging everyone's health.

look at this way, ron paul doesn't believe in legislating environmentalism because he doesn't believe the executive branch should have the kind of power necessary to enforce such legislation. he thinks that the protection of the environment should be handled by the judicial branch acting on behalf of the private sector.

I read a few post on this thread and I gotta say,he has no idea what he's talking about. You all speak about him as a person that will change america for the better.
He brags about how he was against the war and all, complains how we are in debt ad how we police the world.

He then rambles about the conservative republican vs the neo-liberal republican. he accuses the current republicans as neo-liberal. Bush is a conservative republican. He is NOT a left wing person, he is as right wingged as Hitler. A conservative republican agrees with the war, not because they doesn't really care, but because its a way to impose their ideologies on someone else...like it has always been.

He then continues about the policing the world thing. But implicitly he states that it is all right. He states that the population votes republican after every fucked up war that the States lost. He also complains about the tripple debt deficit, but offers no solution to the problem.

Remember people, conservatives always have a hidden agenda: Nixon, Regan, Bush ect...Behind his stamina and charm hides an ugly side for power.

You can say the same about dem's too, lets be fair. All politicians get swept up in the quest for power.

first off, bush is NOT a true conservative. look at his spending! the man makes fdr look frugal. sure he's opposed to abortion and gay marriage and whatnot, so i suppose you could make a case for him being socially conservative (in some ways) but HE IS BY NO MEANS A FISCAL CONSERVATIVE. and therefore, not a true conservative.

secondly, the left-right political spectrum is completely inadequate - anyone who got past 10th grade history should be well aware of this. so please don't boil this or any political issue down to right wing vs. left wing. it just doesn't work. politics are not one-dimensional. there are a few 2D political "compasses" out there, and even they, i think, fall short.

as for the sentence about conservative republicans supporting the war...well, that's one of several i just literally can't understand. not like "where does he get that from?" can't understand, but more like "what does that even say?" can't understand. but if you're trying to say that it's only "conservatives" who try to impose their ideologies on someone else...well, once again i'm left wondering about your level of education.

how does ron paul implicitly state that policing the world is alright? i have no idea where you could have gotten that from. he may be the one candidate who is saying clearly and fimrly that it is not alright. most of the republicans agreed with going to iraq and don't want to leave, and the democrats want to send troops to pakistan against musharraf's wishes and/or (in a stance that still completely baffles me) send troops to the sudan. ron paul supports a non-interventionist foreign policy. please tell me where you got the idea he "implicitly" states otherwise.

also, your notion that he has no solution to the deficit problem...what? do you have any idea the kinds of reductions he wants to make in the government, particularly the executive branch? that right there saves A LOT of money. he also wants to deal with the deficit problem by allowing the free market to work instead of crippling it with the burdens of international trade agreements. which would bring in a lot of money. those sound like solutions to me, or at least steps towards one.

I don't most of elevens thoughts but he is right about one thing and that one thing is ron paul is the best canidate.

If you are so deluded as to think that by in large the majority of the site or posters in this thread agree with you, please go read the comments in this thread again. This thread has been debate and insults, not intelligent discussion and respectable talk, by en large promoted and goaded on by the ravenous supporters here. If you really honestly walk away from this with the notion that more people have sided with RP's stance than be freaked out by it supporters, I really worry for you.

I think it is safe to say that regardless of whether you agree with Paul's views or not, he does not have a realistic shot at winning the nomination.
