Insurance Premiums WILL Rise...

It's true, i was at snowbird today and ended up talkin with some executive guys and the Snoqualmie incident IS a huge cause for concern. The guy's i talked to told me that Snowbird's insurance premium is going to rise for next year, even if Snoqualmie wins their appeal but probably not as much. The decision the Snoqualmie guy made to sue them is going to be costly for the industry, i don't know what else to say, i didn't get into a deep conversation with these guys, but it makes me worried that skiing wont progress like it has been the past few years due to things like this happening.
Now if you don't know what i'm talking about with the whole Snoqualmi, the basic story is that a guy went off a jump, overshot it, got paralyzed and sued for 14.5 million dollars.
Thoughts??

being really expensive has never stopped people from overcrowding the slopes anyway I dont think it's really that big of a deal if ticket prices go up. yea people are gonna complain about it, but they'll pay anyway. most of them at least.

its not so much the price, but also the terrain there willing to open or closing something that really shouldnt be closed because they think its a little more dangerous than usual or whatever.

isnt the problem the resorts will have to pay more, not that they will have to raise ticket prices? ya that hasnt kept people off the hill and if they raised them people would still go, but if a resort can knock down their park and lose a relatively small group of skiiers, but still attract the majority of tourists, while saving money (on insurance, park staff, snowmaking, etc.) then from the business sense of a resort, it wouldnt make sense to keep a park going especially if insurance rates rise.
and ya kill the parapolegic

Its all about cost effective terrain... The amount of money a park takes compared to what it brings in is a big factor. You will see alot of resorts in the next few years looking at the parks and making the decision if they still want to make that kind of an investment. Any terrain on a mountain, someone can hurt themselves and blame the resort, but parks are gaper central. it's like a freaking magnet....

not really, the ski area isn't responsible for trees and rocks. It's man made shit. Insurance companys are shit in general.

One of the biggest red herrings in the ski business is that insurance premiums increases lift ticket prices. It's not true. When you look at costs for a ski area insurance is actually way down the list.
This case could effect terrain or whats built in a park. But most likely will not. The park has become too big a money maker for the areas.

yeh it sucks people sue the mountain, but the black park at blackcomb is a good idea , you should have to wear a helmet also its good they rope shit off csaue at mammoth people take there kids through the park all the time and its fuking dangerous... but as scott schmidt said in Blizzard of Ahs on the train from verbier to Chamoinx "people that sue ski areas should be shot".

Next thing you know somebody will file a lawsuit against Whistler because they dropped a cliff way out in the backcountry and didnt know the landing was flat. Theres a reason you see all the gayest warning labels on shit, because no matter how obvious it is, somebody will file some lame ass lawsuit.

My friend is on the park crew at snowbird and was supposed to be the park manager next year but there insurance went up 50,000 he said they are only gonna have a pipe and a couple rails next year because insurance is going through the roof from this lawsuit.
Its not that ticket prices are gonna go up, mountains are gonna lose their park all together

You have no idea what you are talking about. Insurance is a huge cost. This WILL effect all terrain parks. The park is not the cash cow you think it is.
I build Park for a living. I'm very worried about how this will screw with the freedom of my job and lifestyle. Anybody that just blows this one off, has no clue about resorts.

oh you are quite wrong my friend. What I was trying to state with that post is that people these days leave their responsibility at the gate. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. Resorts get sued for non man-made stuff as well. You can guess how most of those non man made cases turn out, but you would be suprised the things people think the resort should make them aware of or that the resort should have done more to prevent their stupidity for what they did. On natural terrain, as well as man made. Some lady got all pissed because it was spring skiing conditions in march and they wanted winter conditions. people are just morons. that's all I was implying there.

I don't know yet, as my two week vacation after the season was over has morphed into a little over a month now and i'm still out and about. And I am not sure what I am legally able to say, not say. Which is why I limit my responses in these types of threads. Because I am very passionate about what I do, and I get pretty hot headed when certain things are said that are blatently false or the such... So ya. When I find out anything for next season and then find out what I can or can not say, I'll discuss it in the utahr forum... BUT, when I had a chit chat with the mountain manager earlier, the topic of terrain parks cost vs income and why it's worth it is always on a resorts mind. It's part of the business. and insurance is a heavy hitter.

Well I was speaking from my experence working on a park crew. There's a reason the area made us make little snow bridges from the jump to the rail, and didn't fence off cliffs.
Insurance comapanys are also the reason so many small ski areas are now closed.
