Maybe i'm just mildely retarded, but all i ever use poles for are balance and for pushing. So whay are some so expensive. Is it just that some poles look chiller, cause if t5hats the case, just paint em at home.
The Armada importer keeps trying to sell me his $150 poles and I'm always like "DUDE NO WAY those poles don't even have proper grips I'll take my $10 scott poles anyday and if I wanted poles with no proper grip I'd just steal some rentals you dumbass."Â
then he says
"It's progression man."
then I say
"progression is guys like Pep Fujas rocking no poles."
then he says
"WHAT??? I don't believe u. You're lying!!!!"
then I walk out "whatever man u suck. it's just a fucking stick of metal get over it."
thats why i dont use poles.
i dont need them for balance and the only time i ever need them is for the lift line. and i just take em of and walk if i really need to
^ Yeah, carbon fiber poles are for the most part the expensive ones. Of course some are still very overpriced. The shop I bought from threw my carbon fiber poles in for free with my skis. Oh, and yes they're important for skiing, at least for out of park. I know they've certainly saved me from falling over tons of times.
I ski alot of powder with out poles here in Utah. Snowbird/alta, pc, It doesn't hold me back. In fact, it makes snowmobile skiing a heck of a lot less complicated. Sure I have to waddle occasionally but if anything it makes you draw your lines out more on the mountain and carry more speed. The fact is, the more I ski without poles, the more useless they seem. The only thing I hate is how I get fucking labeled as being trendy for skiing without poles, and how popular it seems to be. 3 years ago when I started cruisin alta without poles I got shit talked on me. Now everyones doing it. hows that for Irony. Oh and don't give me this shit about fat skis/good technique blah blah blah. I ride 189's.
Thanks its about time until this thread turns into a poles or no poles debate. How would this dude not understand that some poles are made out of aluminum the material we use for cans and some out of carbon fiber or graphite or a compopsite so that they are lighter and last longer.
skiing at alta without poles is stupid. you can get around soo much faster with them on the traverses. Poles also help greatly with timing the initiation of turn if you use them properly.
Bumps are almost impossible without them.
i have a tirck i do with my poles in the air it called the cowboy hahah put the poles bettween your legs and then raise your arm and swing it around haha
and i do tend to buy nicer so called "designer poles" because i rarely ever break them. ive had the same pair of joysticks that ive had for three years and the only damage to them are paint scratch's. im a pretty agressive skier and get at least 60 days a season in the park so idk why i dont break em like other people.
skiing without poles just looks shity. Sure its easyier to grab but it doesnt really matter when you look dumb and when even snowboards talk shit cuase it looks gay.
So right now only reason to use poles is 'look cool' and so you 'aren't gay' and so 'not to get shit from snowboarders'. lol. I ski for fun! Looking cool is side-effect!
When have we cared what a snowboarder thinks? I say 90% of skiers probably dont use poles effective or even know what they are for! It gives you something to do with the hands.
BUT, poles are a left over from old school technique, where they were used to initiate sharp, fast turns as I see it. These days it is more a huge carve style, bombing, so poles are completely worthless unless you need for balance! In some place like powder I suppose it is O.K. But otherwise, who needs. If you have good balance, new school ride type, and like grabs and airtime then why hinder with poles? I raced even with no poles, but poles only in SuperGS event.
Regards,
Oh, but for cheap poles (I buy for powder and for hiking flats and climbing), several good company (scott, K2, others) make models in $30USD range, on tramdock or similar. Just got some K2 Silencer for this year for 2599JPY(around $20USD)!!! Good time to buy, off season.
Good luck,
i dont know why people think no poles looks gay. in my opinion sliding a rail with your jacket undone and poles pointing in the air looks fucking shit. it makes skiing look shit.
poles are left over from 80 years ago, cruisin in norway with a 10 balancing pole in your arms.
i cant imagine riding without poles...it would be really weird. no balance, no style..
but, of course, if you start riding no poles from the very beginning, i suppose its ok.
