Young amateur skiers better than young snowboarders???

amateur skiers seem like ten times better than the snowboarders that are equivalent to them in age, yet the snowboarders that dont do really anything get more attention. it just seems that way to me.

yeah i agree. Kinda. Snowboarders always just get more attention because they've had a "cool" image from the start, whereas we're still stereotyped as like... oldschool carvers in tight pants. But Yeah i agree with your statement about the am skiers being better. I think it's because the basics of snowboarding are harder to learn

Skiing is easier than snowboarding. At least at first. That could be at least part of the reason.

well your going to see your gapers (don't like to use that word but can't think of another one) in both sports but snowboarding has been blessesd with the cool image.

think about your basic group of public school girls. do they want to go skiing this weekend or do they want to go snowboarding. of course they want to snowboard, i can't explain this phenomina and don't know why anyone would want to.

if what i said above holds true there would be a lot more people our age snowboarding than skiing and when you look into the park scene we are usaully so outnumbered anyway that the sucky skier won't catch your eye while the 70 sucky snowboarders waiting to hit a box thats 2 inches off the ground do. I think if we had equal numbers it would balence out a lot more. but our numbers are a lot less so it doesn't show up as well.

then again i think back to sundayriver this year and you really notice skiers ripping it up over snowboarders. Curtis with his orange. you can see that thing from fucking anywhere and you notice it plus he rips. i can't think of a snowboarder that rips real hard at sunday river besides cassidy.

whatever. final statement. its a numbers game and a recriational/junky relationship and we happen to be holding the right cards in both hands so we just look better. if both of those catogories were absolulty even i think it'd be level.

^^^i agree with you man, there are alot of boarders, so the gaper percentage is similar but it would have higher numbers. The way i look at it both sports have outstanding riders, but because skiing has only once again become "cool" our strong riders stand out a bit more

the hardest part for beginers in both sports is they can't comprehend learning foreward. snowboarders lean back and they fall. skiers learn back and they give themselves a fucking workout.

carving about the same. it feels a lot more fluid on skis and is a lot easier to learn.

intro to park-
straight airs off jump are easier on snowboards then skis.
obvously ride on 50/50s on snowboards are easier then skis.
boardslides on both levels are about the same. they have better balence though.

intermediate park.
spins. so much easier on skis.

thats basicially it played out. i snowboarded for 9 years so if you would like to chalenge my points on snowboarding vs. skiing go ahead. your arguement probably won't hold enough experience. i say there is defenetly a curve. skiers can pull off "bad form" from the beggining but thats not really enough to get you to the park becasue you'll just fall on your ass anyway. Snowboarders catch up and hold their own at a really low level on rails while skiers are forced to play catchup but then they bypass them real quick with the ease of spinning on skis.

you think skiings easier?? weird...i tried snowboarding for a bit and picked it up so easy. i was trying 3s the second day out. i think snowboardings a lot easier and it seems like skiing takes a really long time to master.

we also have to consider the development we have. i became freestyler skier after 9 years on a snowboard and a few before before that as a 4-6 year old.

did you go the other way around?

think about it, our sports are similar enough that if you semi-rip in one of them if you switch over you we already grasp the concepts to become a ripper in the other.

lyk everyone else is saying we r jus outnumbered. people jus cant get over the stereo typical image of skiing. i remember wen i was young all i wanted to do was snowboard b coz skiing was jus racing. now its evolved n its jus so much better

The fundamentals of skiing may be easier to grasp due to more natural 2 foot control but, the technical aspects of the sport are more difficult than boarding!! At least thats how it is for me in terms of just riding i peaked but skiing there is always room to improve and refine your skills

The NextSnow competition for 13 and unders is a good indication of trends IMO - the skiers definitly throw bigger and more technical than snow boarders.  Not sure why it is at all.  At about 15 yrs of age the snowboarders catch up.  It may have to do some thing physique and body development.

Sorry to disagree with you, but this is more opinionated. I think its way easier to spin on boards (I do both) because you can just carve in and the carve keeps you spinning. Sure you can carve in on skis, but it's harder. My 2cents

yup. its because snowboarding has the "cool" image, when kids think of snowboarding they dont  think of like boarder cross and stuff. and all the young kids have big egos and they want to be cool, so they snowboard, they dont want the kids in their class envisioning them in tight spandex suits on race skis.

They say skiing is harder to master. (or at least get really good at.) if it's true I feel so good. :D
Back on topic.. if you've ever watched nickelodeon (I know, I know...) they occasionally have these 'young kids being healthy and doing sports' thing. Its always a bunch of little boarders with their juice boxes doing 180's.

yeah, and that is the explanation for all the lil chodes on snowboards. they watch nickolodeon (sp? what the fuck kind of a word is that anyway?) and they see all the lil kids on snowboards with juiceboxes doing half-assed 180's being "healthy" and they want to get healthy too. the world finally makes sense. damn i want a juicebox.

my sis skis.. but snowboarding does seem a little harder since they have no way of slowing down or a proper way to stop..they just have to fall on their butts or spray. and it seems they have to maintain balance.

I share the same views as a lot of people here. Skiing, the learning curve is much more "user-friendly." There's an easy way to, ski, and there's the right way to ski. You can't pizza your way down on a snowboard, yeah you can go down on your heelside the entire way but that's obviously not the idea of snowboarding. Skiing, you can pizza your way down and there you are, turning and such. It gets reversed for snowboards on rails, and then back to skiing for air.

I think snowboarding is a thing that at some point just starts to take age/maturity, whereas skiing you can kinda blend into from a young age.

I was thinking about this a bit, I had this weird notion. Tell me if this makes any sense.

So it seems to a lot of kids that snowboarding is "cooler" than skiing, its just a stereotype, sad, but still true. So if somebody wanted to do half ass freestyle to look cool, they would snowboard. The only kids who are going to start skiing are the ones who want to ride twins. Seems to me like all the young people on skiing are more committed to it, very few people ski to look cool, so we have a more talented group of skiers coming up because they are all doing it because they want to. Snowboarders have to sift through all the wannabes who do it to look cool, and you still come out with less committed individuals.

Make any sense? Didn't think so. I dont get it anymore either.

i agree with most things that you just said, but going off jumps on snowboards is harder than on skis in my opinion. on skis you can go straight off, but on a snowboard you are sideways and its harder (for me atleast). i understand it's different for some peeple, but for me going off a jump on skis is easier.

im gonna have to disagree, i think snowboarding is way easier than skiing on your first few days, but its harder to push past the intermediate level on a snowboard than it is skis.

having said that when both are as qually hard to progress when u have reached an advanced level, skiing probs just looks easier cause u can go way faster and much bigger on skis.

oh and ametuer skiers will get more recognition when the sports outgrows the steriotype given to us by the late eighties/ early nineties. (with the aspen extreeme video taking out and honourable mention)

snowboarding has just been regarded as cooler for longer, and has been doing freestyle for longer and thats why there is more comps and recognition for ametuer snowboarders

No one rents twins. They are only used if you are going switch. No beginner is going switch, eh? These kids who learn skiing, learn on shitty dynastars. Kids who learn snowboarding start off with a board that has the ability to go switch whenever they are good enough. Second, they can take their board to the park, pull off a straight air mute and look like the shit. Not many kids start out skiing freestyle, they start on groomers and expect to do what their parents do. The kids who verge into freestyle have the fundamentals down and are ready to break away from what their parents do. In snowboarding, not many parents are there and many kids expect to go into snowboarding for the freestyle aspect. Most freestyle skiers start from 3-10. Most snowboarders start from 10-18. Puberty is the difference. Teenagers have a tendency to like extreme things.  You can expect to hop on a snowboard which is just as cool as a skateboard.

exactly. same at my hill, theres like 4 park skiers and it makes me feel good even to switchup because there are so few park kids there that it looks cool to anyone. especially impresses my snowboarding friends, i have a few who are good and still think skiing is neon tights

Ok this is a great thread no joke. Im a snowboarder and i feel the same way. Amateur skiiers are much sicker. But ive tried skiing and i feel like skiing is way easier on jumps then snowboarding. I threed on my first day over a 25 foot. and almost 5vd but all in all skiing at lower levels is much sicker in most cases

it makes sense if you dont think about it too hard.
basically what i think your saying is that there are a lot of freestyle snowboarders who seem okay but when compared to skiers at that same 'level' skiers just throw down bigger, and skiers are easier to identify as being good at freestyle whereas there are a bunch of snowboarders and you really have to look to find the good one.
because anyone can slide 50/50 on a snowboard.

uhh....maybe i just confused it more...oh well
i guess i thought too hard
