What's right for me?

So I'm looking into getting a new video camera and was wondoring what would fit me best. I currently have a Sony DCR-HC21 which has been a great beginning camera, but just isn't putting out what I want anymore. I would like a camera with high resolution (HD preferibly), manual controls (nothing too excessive, but enough to control my shots), and I would like to keep it under $1,000 USD. Anybody have any suggestions?
