Help me with a ski/art project

hey guys, I'm doing a discussion with my class on newschoolers about art and skiing, and if ski art can even be considered art.

what do you think? is ski art, art?

Do people that don't ski have any interest in this kind of art?

Soon enough you will be buying art- will you buy ski art or traditional art like an ansel adams?

I found a few examples here on newschoolers that you should look at and decide...is this art? Do you like? which one is your favorite?

where do you think ski art is going in the future? does it have a future?

In my opinion I think that ski art, is art. I am a skier and I love how this shit looks! I like digital art a lot and I like art that influences me with my interests.

I will make this kind of art on my own, and would maybe even buy some if there was something I really liked. the digital guy with boxes and the hands on the top or whatever is tight. If that were mounted on something large it would be a great piece for a living room or sports room.

I dont think that non skiers would ever like ski newschool ski art.  I dunno, personally I think its lame for someone just to redraw a ski picture they saw.  Its soo easy just to copy a picture you see in a magazine or whatever.

I like more abstract art.  Out of all those pics you posted, i like the wire model the best, the others are all meh....

yeah dude i would but ski art in a heart beat. but this defiantly is the wrong place ask if people who dont ski would buy ski art because well... we all ski or at least ride down the hill in a sheet of p-tex and metal edges so... yeah

oh and if you have seen something in other forums that is cool, post it! I only looked for a little while for ski art. I'm sure other people have found some cool stuff on here too.

i view the act of skiing as artistic expression. it (can be) a very artisticly driven sport, from graphics, expression throu motion, and films. very few ski films are what i would call truely artistic (some being Royalty, TBC, some of the level 1 films). Films like the MTB movie the collective, are Realy artistic films.

as for art of skiing, i think its usually a little tacky, cause its almost inevitably just rendered from an existing photo (so why bother to recreate it?), but skiing inspired art is a very valid concept. just to take bikes again, look at all the art and sculpture thats produced using recycled parts. it could definatly be done, and has somewhat with skichairs and stuff.

so yea, i would say skiing can easily be viewed as an art, in its intirety, and it is possible to extract artistic influence from it as well.

Okay I moved it back, just briefly..   I can see stuff like this on Condo walls at ski resorts.  whimsical (sp?) stuff like this is fun to look at and embodies skiing as being fun.  Good stuff!

wow! that is good! anyone else have some examples I missed? what about ski photography? there are some great photos people have taken on newschoolers too. would someone buy a photo? would non-skiers be interested?

I think maybe. there are some great photos that having skiing in them but are almost like landscape photos. think powder magazine covers with sunsets and such...

Mad Steeze Armadas, without a doubt art.  Burton (I believe) had an exhibit somewhere with a tn of one of a kind boards designed by graffiti artists... dope.

A urinal with a signature written on it and placed in an art gallery has been considered art. Not to mention countless "art" projects funded by the Canada council for the Arts.

Ski related art could be on par with many of the paintings in art galleries, but how many practised artists are that obsessed with skiing, and what percentage of the art gallery crowd would be interested in that kind of subject matter?

I understand what you mean by just copying an existing photo. but isn't that most of digital art or most art in general? artists just copy something and put it in a new media.

Well..the whole copying from a picture not being real art is kind of a silly assumption. You are ruling out some very famous artists with that. How do you think portraits are painted? Someone snaps a picture and paints from it. Even if it's not from a photo.. say a landscape, someone sits outside and looks at it..then puts it on a canvas. It exists in real life so why bother recreating it? It's the way the artist percieves things and how they compose the piece that makes it art. I do think it's a little silly to take someone else's photograph and copy it directly, which I've done in the past.. But it's neat to try to paint or draw the coolest picture you can find.

Anyway. just my input.

good examples. I guess you could look at all ski and snowboard graphics as art, and they are. But I'm more interested in things that you might hang on your wall. Will we ever see a truly famous ski photographer?

Here's your response from one of those hoity-toity gallery people you may have mentioned. (6+ years of art school and a pretty good understanding of art history and theory)
Art is defined by its audience. Art is a much broader term than people think... virtually anything can be labeled as "art," because art is really defined by whoever made it. Art is the umbrella term, under which you have a variety of sub-categories, like "fine art" which is what you find at the Louvre and NYC galleries, then you have "craft," like quilting and handmade items often made in bulk. You also have more commercial fine art, photography and paintings that appeal to a general audience, like Thomas Kinkade. Ski art is without a doubt art, it is just a matter of which category it fits under. At this point, it has not entered the fine art category, selling pieces for tons of money and showing in high-end galleries. It COULD (and may have but i am unaware), but to do so, someone would probably have to create an entire body of work and be able to speak very clearly about a concept behind it, why it was created and why it is fresh and new. In that case, "art snobs" would love it. That's why the white canvas with a red blob or the urinal mean so much in the art world-- because someone had a very interesting concept behind it.

I don't know a thing about ski art, but from my non-ski/snowboard background, I don't enjoy it. Of course, since I'm not looking at it, this makes it hard to know of anything I could like. I do enjoy the skier made of wire/whatever, I can appreciate the time it took, but I could never own anything like that. I suppose ski art is just another of the many genres of art, like landscapes, pop art, and what not. I do ceramics, and there are some really ugly looking pots that people make, however, some of these only potters can appreciate, while the general public will just pass on by it.

i think that the more art in the world the better. art is completely relevant to the audience of course so i may not sell the art in a metropolitan area but look at the way every ski resort decorates the cabins and hotel rooms...with ski art! whether it be from a 'antique' looking ski poster or of a water color of a pretty slope with a skier is some awful one piece. or what about the picturesque black and white pictures. ski art is relevant to product design and ski resorts. if you are aware of your market you can have a very successful career in 'ski art.' nsp
