ok, so i spent quite a bit of today watching skate videos, which sucked cos it was super nice out and all i wanted to do was skateboard, but a front board on a flatbar somehow managed to leave me with a broken skateboard, and i cant afford to buy a new one...college sucks.
anyway, i have come to the realization that anything cool that has ever come to skiing or snowboarding came from skateboarding. rollerblading too, but i dont wanna talk about that...
if anyone has ever seen the hot chocolate tour video, youll understand what im talking about. watching a video like that (actually pretty much anything with marc johnson or gino iannucci) makes you just wanna cruise. go bomb hills, carve between cars, pop on and off curbs, nothing serious, just go out and roll. i have yet to come across a ski or snowboard video that makes me wanna do the same. i might get stoked to go out and slide a rail or hit a jump, or maybe hop around on some stuff on a snowboard, but never just go ski around slowly. thats something thats only gonna come from skateboarding.
the whole scene in skating is just so far beyond other things too. theres a certain connection that comes from pushing that everyone shares, regardless of where theyre from, what theyre wearing, or how good they are. now look at skiing...how many times do you see a group of kids hanging out in the park with their rasta gear on, just vibing on other kids whos style theyre not feeling, or arent good enough for them. snowboarding is the same way, but the ties to skateboarding, and the much larger percentage of skateboarders who participate, kinda help give it at least a little closer to the skate feel.
the whole fresh v. hesh thing has never been an issue in skateboarding. look at like, baker, for instance. you got guys like greco, dollin; it really doesnt get any more gnarly than those guys, style wise. crazy tight everything, silk scarves, ripped tshirts, the whole sid vicious motif, with a bit of bowie glam thrown in. now on the same team, you got kids like terry kennedy, who could possibly be the most ghetto dude around. legit from compton, actually raps, has fronts, etc. the complete opposite of those other guys. yet theyre on the same team, they skate together, they spend a whole lot of time together. try to find that kind of thing in skiing. all youll get is 'pshh, emo is so fucking gay, xxxxl for life, that kid must suck cos he doesnt wear it, so im not skiing with him'. you all know youve seen it, and a good bit of you have probably participated. or the mess of good kids who hang out with eachother exclusively and refuse to talk to anyone who isnt at their level. let the kids be kids, and why the hell not teach em a thing or two. ive had plenty of kids come up to me and ask how to do tricks (usually after a 'why do you wear those tight pants?') and i have no problem helping em out. you really dont see that with quite a few other kids.
music, editing styles, angles...they were all used in skate videos first. hot chocolate, once again, has pretty much every single song used in teddybear crisis in it...it came out first. i found that to be pretty funny how blatantly they bit the soundtrack, but, oddly enough, that was also one of my favorite ski videos, because skateboarding pretty much did things for it.
i guess what im trying to say is how much i would love to see skiing adopt the same type of style as skateboarding. the unity that people have just for skating, regardless of anything else. theres way too much people are worrying about in skiing beyond actual skiing. try to just have a good time, ski with whoever, skiers or snowboarders, and youll get a glimpse of how good a time skateboarding can be.
hate on me all you want...i just wanted to say it.
oh, and 1000 posts holy crap!
