what happened to ur friend?

ok nvm now its working...
a good read, accidents happen when you least expect them... my bro is a very good skier and just suddenly collapsed while skiing and he shattered his femur. That was 5 years ago and he is back now but the truth is that things can go terribly, terribly wrong. That's one of the reasons I don't want to push myself to hard... I love the satisfaction of learning a new trick or getting better but I dont see myself spinning 9s or landing huge 40 foot tables switch, because things can go wrong!
I'm caught between trying to get better but also not hurting myself. It's a delicate balance that can be upset very easily. I can't help but feel that one that I will tumble backwards after landing switch and land on my neck. The fear of getting seriously hurt is very real!
Sorry about your friend! That's really too young to go!

you cant let fear of injuries stop you from pushing yourself to do what you want. injuries are common in the sport but you cant go out skiing worrying about that all the time. i mean for sure dont go out and try beyond your ability level and do something that is just stupid. if you work your way up and are confident that you can do it than usually you can. but to let the fear of injury prevent you from accomplishing your goals is even worse.

It's not about fear of injuries, dude.
It's about life, and only having one crack at it.
Skiings getting WAY out of hand. Don't get me wrong, I love originality, style and general steeziastical skiing, but taking dumb risks isn't something that impresses me much.
When I see Jamie Pierre "jump" a 250ft+ cliff, it doesn't impress me. He didn't ski off a cliff. He fell off with skis on. When I see SethMo backflip off an 80ft cliff and land on his feet....in sicke snow....that impresses me.
It's all about averages. If you do something that's got a 1% chance of injuring or killing you, that's fine. But when you do it 100 times, guess what, you'se going to die.
RIP to that kid. 18 is WAY WAY to early to go. He sounded like a really cool kid and I hope his death (and those deaths of many others this year) isn't unnoticed. My thoughts are with his parents who probably regret not holding him back a bit more. Even at 18, you don't fully comprehend the gravity of your actions sometimes.
RIP dude.

I understand how probability works, my friend....and I'm impressed that you do too. You're missing the point, rather you're dwelling on the intrinsic mathematical details of my comment. I'm not saying you'll surely be dead if you take a 1% risk 100 times, but guess what? It's damn likely and that's not a risk that anyone should be taking with their lives. If you don't understand probability, and you're betting your life on stupid things, I suggest that you go back to grade 10 (or wait for it), and then wait until your 20 yrs old to understand my point. It's not about "calculated risks". If you have the option of doing something that could feasibly result in your maiming and/or death, think again.
The problem with competitions like that is that people figure "glory" into the equation. The fact is, skiers don't get any glory through death....so don't bet on it. It's not like a soldier going off to war. Nobody's weighing life & death against vs. saving someone's life and/or making a difference in the world.
RIP.

Your exactly right, you do only have one crack at it, thats why you have to make sure you take your best shot. One of my friends once told me "If you dont live life, your just taking up space". In our world that means skiing. It means skiing new lines, hitting new cliffs and trying new tricks. Nothing beats the rush of landing a drop or skiing a line that you found a bit scary. Your saying that skiing is getting out of hand, where as I say this is just where it belongs. Yes some of the stuff is a bit rediclous, but it is a step forward. You dont get anywheres by always doing the same thing. You dont grow by always playing it safe. I find that someone tends to grow the most right when their in the middle of a new cliff dop/trick/line, because its when your stairing into the unknown is when someone finds out what their are made of.
You say skiing is going in the wrong direction, but I say that it has always been on the right route, and its just starting

it's all about knowing your limits and making smart choices. Now obviously there's always fear of trying something new but what you have to figure out is if what you want to try is within your ability. A good trick is to try and see the trick in your mind. Picture what it will feel like and what you have to do to make it work. If you can do that then you're genarly fine. That being said things can always go wrong.

I agree, things can always go wrong.
But the pressure to try something that you're not really digesting in your head in these comps has got to be pretty common. Being lucky doesn't equate being good.
If death is progression, then, ya, I don't want a piece of it. If death is just a youthful mistake, I'm saying, don't make that mistake. Learn from others'.
That's it.
For the record, I like where skiings going, it just has to stop putting people in stupid decisions. A great example was that ski show they had in the Summer in San Fran. The setup was SOOO sketch, it was ridiculous....however athletes were pressured to huck their junk off of it. And, yes, people got severly hurt, and were lucky to not croak.

Please fella, im well over 20, your original post definitely made it sound like you dont know how probability works. I get your "dont take stupid risks" point. But were do you draw the line between a smart risk and a dumb one? Freeskiing is a risk sport, it involves getting yourself into sketchy situations, sending it and crashing or skiing away. I like the fact that alot of the situation we get ourselves into are dangerous. Its a good feeling to push boundaries. If the price i pay to push some boundaries is my own life, well then that sucks, but id rather of lived a life doing what i wanted then watching people send it and wish it was me.

That's a nice story that you're 20 and all, but it doesn't change the fact that actually YES again simplistically that's how probability works.
If the prob. was 100% you died. than 1 out of 1 (or 100/100) times you would die. IF the prob is 50% than 1/2 (or 50/100) times you would die. If the prob was 1% than 1 out of 100 times you would die. Simple fractional addition will show you that his math is right that IF the probability was actually 1% of the time you skied you would die if you skied 100 times. Probabalistic law (or the law of probabilities will tell you this).
And just in case you still think this is wrong than do the math before you reply. Let me get you started. 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100 ... (n) where the n represents that you've done this 100 times. Than find the common denominator, than add the numerators together and voila you have a fraction (which will represent your percentage of death if you skied 100 times and the probability was that you had a 1% chance of dying every time you skied. Now in your next reply report what value you got for me in this fraction and than tell me that "YOUR" way of stats is right and his is wrong.

haha u kids and ur stats arguments.
if its 1% chance of getting killed from going that means it mean taht you have a 1% chance of getting killed everytime u go.. that never changes, u will always have only have just the 1% chance.
theoreticaly if you go 100 times then yes one of those times u should die but that inly theoreticaly.
if you flip a coin its a 50% chance of heads. that dosent mean that if you flip it tiwce one MUST be heads. it means that theoreticaly one of the times should be heads. but hey... you could flip a coin without getting heads a few times in a row.

Ah my ol boy E normis has it right.
Bailer, you have a point, but you are also looking at it from only one side. There are also those people that might try something that has them at a 1/100 percent chance of dying, and... actually die.
Hence, the theory is correct and it is not just hypothetical. If you look at 1000000 people taking this 1/100 chance, you will find that all in all, the probability is, indeed, correct.
Just like with a coin. You might be able to flip a coin 5 times even, and it might be heads every time or maybe 4 outta 5 times. This doesnt mean that the probability of it being 50% went down. If you flip this same coin a million times you would probably find that the ratio of heads to tails is essentially 1 or, that it was heads 499992 times and tails 500008 times, or even closer.
I hate probability, why did I just type that.

yeah man, you got it. if there is a 1/100 chance of dying and you do it 100 times, you do not face a certain chance of dying. it would be (1/100)X(1/100)X(1/100)... 100 times.

haha i hate stats too but yea it deff wouldnt be 499992 - 500008 for a million coin flips. it would be way more off then that. bust out your normal distribution table and run me some hypothesis tests.

Ahh you kids. That was merely just an example. Maybe it would be 499924 and 500076, I don't know. Either way, you divide one by the other and you will find you get basically 1. Seriously, take a penny and flip it 100 times. I would put money on it that the difference won't be greater than 45 - 55. If it is, then you need to look at YOUR normal distribution and see that you just totally lucked out and are in fact, on the outer parts of the bell curve. Anyway, as the flips approach infinity, you will get even closer to 1. Hence, the probability is indeed 50 damn %.
Again, this works the same way with the chance of death thing. Rockymountain, you might as well give up on whatever you are trying to say.

i can't believe that you people can't just take a simple message and accept it. JUST BE CAREFUL skiing is calculated and sometimes the equation doesn't work out!
All times are Eastern (-5)
