It depends what metal it is - I have a belt that always sets them off. And a pair of shoes I had a few years back had metal lace loops that always set them off.

As for sneeking bullets through, you could put them in a film cannister (probably just opne per cannister though because of the weight, and pack it so that it won't chake about. And say you don't want the film recked (nomatter what they say, x-ray machines do fuck up your film). The security guys are legally obliged to hand-check your bag if you ask them to.
