I rode up Emerald on Whistler last weekend with a guy who was in the stompede, he was telling me about how he has dislocated his shoulder, much like me, and he now wears a donjoy shoulder stabalizer that limits range of motion and provides support heavin forbid you fall. Wondering if anyone else on here uses/ has used one of these before, how it feels and if youve sustained an injury while wearing it? I know this is no substitute for good old physio but it might be a good pre-caution. Thanks
yeah man, i have a bunch of metal in my shoulder, so does my goos buddy. we both got the "661 shoulder stabalizer". its made by 661 for mountain biking, but it works great for skiing. check it out. it has a few velcrow straps that u place wherever you want on the neopreme part to limit motion in whateevr way you want.
It really depends on how bad your shoulder really is. Cause they do stabilize quite well (I used to wear one), but I could still dislocate my shoulder while wearing one (and I did quite often).
Cause once you've dislocated your shoulder like 3 or 4 times, there's pretty much nothing holding it in anymore (at least that's what my doctor said), and there's only so much a brace can do for you. From that point on surgery is your best option for sure. Yeah it'll kill your whole summer, but it will be a million times better when its all said and done.
But if your injury isn't that bad, a brace might be enough for you. From my experience I'll tell you it does limit your range of motion a bit, and you do have to get used to it.
also... not sure how bad your shoulder is, but if you haven't seen a specialist yet, go for sure. They know a lot more than most regular doctors do, and they can give you the heads up on all of your options.
Thanks, good stuff. Ive fully dislocated my shoulder once and had it slip part way out of the joint another time. I do a ton of physio but want something a little more.
I've had some minor dislocations easily popped back in by me, and a few in and outs, and just this past friday, needed to go in to the hospital to have it put back in because it was so far from it's socket (nearly 2 full inches).
I'm going the PT route first and trying that as I've heard of success just by strengthening the surrounding muscles. I am interested in a brace to help avoid any future dislocations. I likely won't be skiing much park anymore, but just want to play it safe.
I've got my eye on the EVS SB03 and am curious if anyone has used it before.
once you dislocate it its never the same again, it will just get worse and worse. Things will stretch, tear, and the whole socket will get looser and looser. Best bet if it dislocates frequently is to have surgery. That's what I had done 6 months ago, and now i'm looking forward to skiing without dislocating
i used a shoulder imobolizer which kinda helped me with my problems. i dislocated my shoulder daily over the season and when i had surgery this spring i had completely frayed my labrum in the front and back of my shoulder. its like a six month recovery time. get the best shoulder brace you can although its not guarenteed to work completely.
that sucks for him. but ive torn my ACL and have to wear a donjoy knee brace. its saved my ass many a time but the only bad thing is i get real bad cramps in that leg
