WTF is up with Ski comapny ADs

WTF is up with all of these ski companies running shots of surfers, mtb. and all other kinds of non ski related shit in there ads, in the various ski mags. I mean shit if our very own ski comapnies arnt going to back the sport and run ads of skiers. then maybe we all should just bite the bullit and switch to snowboarding. Im shure that I am not the only here that feels that ski companies need to start supporting skiers, and not Surfers just because there PR companies think that Surfing is suposed cooler than skiing, and that by running a Ad of a Surfer, there skis will therefore be seen as cool. WTF?

hmmm what companies are you talking about? their are lots of bigger mainstream companies that i know of that do that, the only ski company that i can think of that ran a surfer was k2, but that ad was k2, but it was more advertising their team i think, of course their are ads from people like atomic and stuff, but not many people buy their stuff in the market their advertising to through these magazines so it doesnt really make sense for companies like that to invest money into our market, when they are already on top of the larger market which they are catering to. i think as skiing starts to ge tmore rider owned, smaller companies, or companies specifically targeting the youth market like line, armada, 4frnt, prior(i think), and more snowboard companies manufactuiring skis, that the focus in ads will be more for our market, because the companies will realize that there actually is a decent market growing. dont know if that made any sense

when i said but that ad was k2, i meant to say but that ad was shane szocs and it was advertising their team. i just got ahead of myslef when i was typing

Im not talking about K2, they always run skiers in there ads, Im talking about the biger ski comapines that are actually driving the sport. IE Volkl, Atomic and others. These arethe guys with the deep pockets that are the ones truly incontrol of hte sport. Granted the smaller rider own companies are supporting the sport, but they dont have the impact with the larger outdoor industry that these larger players have. If skiing isever going to be seen as coolo as snowboarding, we as skiers need to start convince the very companies that make are gear, that they need to start promoting sking as cool, and not promote the notion that if you ski on our skis you will be as cool as a surfer, etc.

I'm waiting for someone to come in and say 'we don't want skiing to be cool, ski because you love the sport'. But anyways, I hate hearing that becuase everyone knows that.

I agree with what Grant's saying. Personally, I hate opening up a ski magazine and seeing the Nissan road-gap ad and there being a boarder in it. I mean, they have 2 commercials, why not have 2 pictures?

I haven't really noticed too many other sports being shown in the magazines mostly because I don't buy very many mags. But if this becomes some sort of a trend and more companies start doing it, that'd suck.

im not sure if lightningfarts was being serious, but i honestly dont care weather the sport becomes cool. im still gonnna ski cause i love it. i like the size of our sub-division of the ski industry.

what i think is that with these new companys coming up, an industry focusing on the youth in skiing will be formed. I dont think that we need to see bigger companys like volkl and atomic try to change their image or focus more on 'youth' because they already have a pretty much seperate market. and the youth market in skiing is definately growing as you see rider driven, or snowboard companies making skis popping up, and by the number of little kids on twins you are starting to see.

no i think grants right on when he said that big ski comps are controling the skiing is a thing of luxury and class and snowboarding is the cool new thing... the newschool ski industy has such a huge market but no one in the bigger comps is seeing that... its a new wave thing its going to take time but when it takes off its going to be huge.... everybody knows what snowboarding is now but when my uncle brought the first snowboard ever to his local ski hill everyone was baffeled just like with twin tips now... soon, one of the big comps that grant mentioned is going to see the potental and release it into the mainstream and newschool skiing is going to become the cool thing to do becuse of what we have started to make it in the last 8 or 9 years... as long as we keep shit going some one will catch on that what we do is the next big thing (again)

prob is then we will just become a trend and people will say we will never last so its kinda a double sided sword. i can see this 'skiing revolution' happening when skiier halfpipe is in the olimpics as soon as that happens shit will prob hit the fan

Yo Levin, Im still intown for 2 more weeks, drop me a line, you know the number.

As far as the topic above. Im just saying that it is bull shit when Ski companies run ads that dont feature, skiing and / or at least skiers. Case in point the new Volkl ad features a F!@#ing surfer, I mean shit, cant they even give there own athletes props. Im just saying that by running ADs like that it is like saying to the generall public that if you buy brand X skis, you will almost be as cool as a Surfer. Im just saying that it is time that these larger comapnies, start to invest back into the sport, and not run bull shit ads that try to say that skiing is almost as cool as these others sports. No wounder skiing isnt seen as the in thing, and that skiing takes a backseat to snowboarding now.

But the biger problems lies in the fact that if the ski industry doesnt start to do something soon, there will be less magazines, less pro skiers, les videos, and less ski comapnies. Just look at what has allready happend in the past 10 years, skiing is still on a decline, and drastically needs an influx of new money, and new companies. Like it or not, the ski industry depends on outside sources of income, IE ads from non ski companies with big budgets to help support the magazines and videos that we all enjoy.

Here is when someone chimes in with a anit corprate bullshit post. But unfortuantly thouse are the companies that pay for the content in all of the various ski magazines that you enjoy.

Case in point Snowboarder used to be a insert in Powder, Now, Powder is dwindelling in size every year, I mean do you really want your favorit ski magazines to become inserts in the various snowboard magaizines????

ok, one final point:

Even if you dont agree with the points abouve, im shure that you will with this one:

Every time a ski comapany runs a ad featuring some other sport, they are supporting a photographer, and an athlete, that have nothing to do with are own sport. Wouldnt you rather see that money spent on a photographer and Athlete that are actually skiers??? Im shure that I am not the only one that would perfer for ski companies to spend there advertising budgets supporting thouse in our sport, and not some other sport such as surfing, ETC.

It isnt my bussiness to tell a ski company how they should spend there money, but I do feel it is bullshit that the very companies that make large amounts of money off of our sport, and our athletes, dont support the very group that they are getting rich off of.
