Thoughts on pain by Emmett

I hurt my back skiing today...i mean it really hurt. i have a permanently pinched nerve in my lower back that flares up from time to time. bad news bears.
so i was sitting on the lift trying not to move. and i realized..i can make pain go away. Our brains create pain, and yet there are no pain nerve receptors in the brain.
by logical reasoning, if the brain cannot experience pain, then it has no idea what pain feels like. therefore, pain does not actually exist. if you have the mental strength to overcome pain, it will go away. i did it today i swear to god. it was weird. thoughts?

I just puke, its easier and you immediately feel better.
It's totally possible to block out pain, but the neuronal responses that our brain receive are very hardwired, eg, its difficult to say at least. I used to block out cramps and shit in my legs when I ran cross country during races, and I'll bet that the presence of other neurotransmitters that flare up during activity help block pain as well.
Also, just a personal plug, but if you are interested in pain (a fascinating area of study!), you should check out The Journal of Pain, which is a great scholarly resource. My paper is going to be in it next month!

i guess that helps to some standpoint
i can't really see someone never feeling pain but maybe i just don't have the brain power

i think we feel pain because it is engrained in our minds. like if you stick your finger in a fire, that is supposed to hurt. and we subcouciusly know that. but what if we didnt. if we had no idea what pain felt like, then we would never feel it

There are medical conditions where people can't feel pain but can feel other sensations, so I can't see why it wouldn't be possible to "block" out pain.

What if you get malled by a puma?
Kind of hard to ignore your limbs getting torn from your body.

you're brain can't actualy 'feel' yet you have the sensation of touch
pain is real; just as you're brain takes the messages from other parts of your body and interperates them into say sounds, pictures, smells, feelings, all of which are things that the brain its self cannot do, the brain recieves messages of pain from the PNS and interperates them as so.
the overcoming of pain is your brain ignoring the signals being sent from your body. You're idea of pain on the other hand requires that you have a cognitive recognition of what is causing you pain, yet you can hurt and not know why...or what is causing you pain. So if you can hurt and not know the source of the hurt, then it isn't the case that the brain is just pre-programed to think that something hurts.

yeah, that's what I was going to say. You can feel pain without having any conscious reason.

Well, you haven't really discovered anything new doctors have known this for a while, and what happenes sometimes is that if you expeirence such tramatic(SP?) Pain you mind blocks it out to prevent you from feeling that bad... its like a defence mechanism i guess... another thing that helps with pain is the testosterone... the more that pumps through your body the less pain you feel... its all just chemicals you release in in your body to help you feel a certain way...

but in yoru theory your almost classifying your brain as your whole self. YOU know what pain feels like, your brain doesnt. unfortunately we dont have as much control over our brain as we would like to think. if your hurt yourself its going to hurt nonetheless...its just how well you can take the pain. some people are born for it, and others just cant take it

Pain is just as real as any other sensation.

what if a newborn did that? the baby would definatly start crying and take his hand away from the flame if that happened.
