Longboard season is here!!

Alright longboard experts. I need some help choosing a board. I want something to cruise and and carve on for the summer, then i will take it to college with me in the fall. I will probably just mess around on it so it doesn't need to downhill really well. I was thinkin 34-40 inches. Here is what I am considering:

Landyachtz spud
Fibreflex 38 pintail
Loaded Vanguard (way flexy and pricy)
maybe a Drop wedge (I've heard its way stiff)
or a Rayne Timeline

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Get the Vanguard. At the skate shop I work at we have a one we got for free. It's so fun thing carves like nothing. Funnest longboard I've have ever ridden.

I have a Sector 9 Goddess of speed and its pretty sick. It doesnt havee much flex though.

Ya I am not really a fan of s9. I have a supercruiser and i have probably ridden 5 other ones that my friends own that i didnt like.

Those things look sick. I love how you can change the color for your own graphics. One thing i don't like is that they have a kicktail and that there aren't alot of truck/wheel options. Don't get me wrong i think they look way fun. I assume you own one.. How goes it ride?

well first things first, longboard season never ends.

your prefrences seem similar to mine- something you can cruise and carve around and be able to have total control of the board, and also be able to bomb the occasional smaller hill.

if you're looking into Loaded Boards, take a gander at the pintail.  I can't rave enough about the board, but you might be able to find some other threads where i have gone off about them.  it is the best longboard i have ever ridden out of about 4 sector 9's, 2 landyacht's (sp?), and a few other lesser known brands.  The vanguard is a good choice also, but the pintail is just perfect for me and what i want to do, so im glad i didn't go bigger and get the vanguard.

as for landyachtz, they are very nice boards, however, a lot of them are very specialized and only seem to excel in one area.  while this might not be true for all their boards, the two i rode were excellent for their respective duty, but as an all around board they weren't that great.  my pintail on the other hand allows me to do anything i want with it.  there have been days when i just cruise by myself and have logged in close to  25 miles, but there's also times i just wanna carve up parking lots or maybe play around with some sliding.

unless you absolutely don't want a pintail, i would def look into the loaded pintail or even the Arbor pintail or hybrid.

i dont like loadeds they are way too flexy and not very long. I guess they are cool if you like doing slow runs with wide ass turns, but thats not how i like to longboard. the faster the better man. carving tho too, not just bombing everything.

to each his own, but im sure you used a board with the wrong flex.  there are 3 (or maybe 4) different flexes you can get for each board depending on your weight/what you want.  and as for slow runs with wide ass turns, you couldn't be more wrong.  maybe you just didn't get a chance to get used to the board, but my pintail demolishes other "sidewalk surfer" slalom boards, and i can pull the sharpest tighest carves on a dime. 

again, it's personal feel and oponion, but i definately think you need to spend more time on the board and realize what they're about.

im also interested to see what kind of boards you like.  im looking into trying some new boards and im open to suggestions.

I have a sector 9, It's pretty good for a starter board, and not too expensive

I was planning on getting a loaded this summer but I bought a regular board instead and it's way more fun.

im a pretty avid longboarder so ill share my thoughts
about the boards that ive had expierience


Pintail- Would probably be my choice if i was in your shoes. Sick deck its a v-lam so it has a super responsive flex and is an outstanding all-around board. Im pretty sure it also has the multiple mounting points which are fun to play around and dial in the flex

Loaded- I own a bamboo (do they still make oak?) flex 3 and i gotta say its a sick board. The shape is super sick and very functional, and the board is so freakin light and responsive. The vanguard im my opinion is toally sick for small-medium hills and is great for pumping on flats, but dosent inspire the confidence that a stiffer board allows for. I would say the vanguard is a good board to own but maybe not the one board to own.

Drop Wedge- My good friend has one of these so ive ridden it quite a bit. It's definatley a fun board thats good for anything (and its not really all that stiff). The flex on this board is really good, it can keep up on the big hills no probs and i took it for a couple spins in the garage and it was a blast. I think if i was buying i would go for the cheif haiada though (exact same board just no wedgeing) because sometimes the wedge produces this wierd rocking feeling when your carving and it makes it a little harder to really hold a line


Oh, And definatley check out the fourms on silverfish, they have a crazy amount of info on just about every board

Alright thanks to everyone this is helping out alot. I have looked on silverfish and I have found some pretty good info but they tend to get me confused to. They are always talking about angles and bushings and stuff. Haha. (I can't stand any other any other discussion websites! NS is set up sooo much better)

So far i do like the idea of the loaded pintail. Would it be okay to throw some 180s on it, or would 150s make more sense. I have 150s on my board now and i like the stable feel of the 180s more.

I still like the idea of both the landyachtz boards too. I think they would be great for commuting and could hold their own on hills. But i wonder how fun they would be to just carve around in parking lots and stuff. Espcecially the spud..

The board i would really like feedback on is the rayne. I read that its carving ability compares to the loaded. Plus the shape looks pretty dope and the length is perfect.

Yea, sector 9 is bad quality.  I have a fibreflex pintail and I love it.  It is great for carving because it flexs into turns.

i have a wedge flex, and i have to say i love it. it is a great all-around board. its not too heavy, carves great, and has gotten me to class on time too many times to count. it sounds like your buddy has his front truck too loose in comparison with his rear truck. try tightening the front and loosening the back a little. the wedge in it makes your front foot lower also so its great for pushing.

my only problem with it is that because of the shape of the back of the board its pretty damn hard to manual without scraping your tail.

man, it hurts to talk about this, i blew my ACL out and cant skate till end of the summer, at the earliest. i was sooo lookin forward to ridding again. if you want info on skates, silverfishlongboarding.com is like the NS of oldschool skating. tons of smaller companies, support the indy guys, the boards that come out of small shops are a million times nicer and more soulful than any piece of mass produced crap like sector 9s (which you will NEVER catch me on). if you have any woodworking expierence, build your own deck, its way fun. ive been building boards for like 5 years now, definatly one of the most rewarding things there is, to hand build a deck and then skate it, not much else out there as enjoyable as that.

i own one of the complex decks and it is so much fun. very responsive and with the way the deck is shaped, your feet pretty much lock in. and if you dont like the kick tail on the complex then you could get the cigar, i dont own one but i should have one by the end of the season.

Landyachtz Spud? Do whatever feels right. May I recommend that if you purchase this you look at getting Sky Hooks. hooks that bolt on to your hard ware and you can easily slip your foot under, jump up a curb and pull your foot out for fast footbreaking. (you can find the sky hooks on the landyachtz website under other products.)

Sector 9 and Gravity are definitely start up boards. A good place to look is www.thelongboardstore.com, they have a huge selection. Another sickass place is longboardlarry.net, I am getting the 26" humu, but you want a carvy board. The vanguard is nice, but a little too long for me. I would go with the landyachtz mummy board, its smaller, but it carves really nicely, also the landyachtz evo and the kebbek caften board are nice, they are kind of speed boards, but carve nicely and are not too long. Browse around longboardstore.com, and go with holeys or bear trucks off of longboardstore.com, they are the next generation of carving trucks, and the bears can be switched around the kingpin so they can essentially be two different trucks, carving and bombing. many slalom boards are also sweet for carving and cruising, but longboardlarry.net has the best selection of pure cruising boards. wow, that was a lot

Yeah loaded boards are great, but the truth is, my super ultra stiff s9 bomb hills pintail will flex when i shred on it at high speed, and it hurls you from turn to turn with more power than Ive noticed out of loadeds. Loadeds also have no concave, and have always felt kinda flimsy to me.

Ok here is the straight up truth about what type of longboard you should get:

30-36 inches is ideal, bc you are using it to get around campus. This year was my first year at college and my 40 inch pintail was just too much of a pain in the ass to lug from class to class.

I would go with an arbor board, they look very cool and are very high quality.

I got that one recently, its a mini so its not really what youre looking for, but it cant be beat for zipping around campus and dodging stupid bitches who don't get out of the way on the quad. Get like a 35 inch arbor.

ha sorry to keep going on about this, but you're wrong.  although it's hard to get or find a good pic, this pictures shows a little of the concave.

for me, the concave is perfect for when you really wanna pump or when you wanna get a nice rebound out of your carve, but you're not too locked in where you can't move around a little.  again, different people have different opinions and riding styles, but personally, the pintail is the best board i have ridden so far.
