Northeastern vs. UMass Amherst

I need help deciding where to go for college. Excluding cost, I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two. I intend on majoring in some kind of biological science and then pursuing med school. I also would like to continue my music education. If anyone could share anything they know about these two schools, I would really appreciate it. If you have any questions on what I'm looking for in a school, etc., just post the question or PM me. Thanks!
P.S. I have also gotten into UNH and BU, if you have anything to mention those schools too, go for it. I'm still waiting to hear from Bowdoin.

While I've only visited those schools, one thing you definitely need to consider is what type of area you want to be in; city, suburbs, or rural. You've probably already thought of this, but going on my fourth college, it's something that I personally know has to be considered immensely.

honestly, i would love to be in the city. but at the same time, i really liked umass' location. it's pretty much in between boston and vt mountains, and i'd like to have both of those worlds. but northeastern also has co-op, which is amazing. so this is a really tough decision.

I know what you mean dude; my choices were in the middle of nowhere, outside of a city, and right in the middle of a city. It's such a pain to figure out where you want to be, as it's going to either make the experience incredible or awful. Good luck dude!

Sorry I couldn't give any actual help, but again, good luck.
Although, UNH is a great place. My sister went there for undergrad and goes there for grad school and it's a great, big, welcoming place with a rural small town feel. The town of Durham is actually pretty hopping, with a fair amount to do. It's also wicked close to the seacoast (Portsmouth is a great little city) and beaches and such. Every time I'm on campus, it has such a great atmosphere, as the people also seem nice and there are tons of people so you have so many different options for activity, friends, etc etc etc. My sister also said that most majors don't have huge classes, but you can find them if you want big classes.

Out of those two choices, I would definitely pick northeastern. I think you will get a much better education there, especially with the co-op program. Umass amherst is a huge state school so you prolly won't get as much attention there and be able to interact more with professors. Northeastern has a nice campus for a city school, and you'll still be able to make it up to the mountains in the winter time.

i got into northeastern as well but dont believe im going there b/c im from boston originally and would rather be in montreal. but its such a good school. co-op is such a great program and the school is great for those majors you were interested in. as far as a campus goes, it has a fairly nice one and its still in the middle of boston. really nice and exceptional school if you ask me. id choose it over umass and its still not that far from the mtns.

Really decide if you wanna live RIGHT IN BOSTON cause thats what everyone tells me they didnt realize after they went. A lot of them still loved the school but it really is in the city more than many actual legetiamte city schools

i go to umass. i guess your decision is going to be based on if you want to be in the city or out here in the middle of nowhere. but really, there is a pretty good amount of stuff to do around here. i dont get bored too easly here. pluss, its only an hour from mount snow. and then like an hour and a half from stratton/okemo. 2 from killy. yadda yadda, its pretty close to skiing for mass. but yeah, i like it just fine. i know ryan williams goes to school at tufts in boston, and i think he likes it. send him a message or soemthing, im sure he would be down to help you out, cuz i know he skis probably every weekend from boston. i think his ns name is ar5180 or something. cant think of it right now

undergrad doesnt mean shit unless we're talking ivy vs. non-ivy stuff. i work in science and hire people all the time. basically it comes down to what you did at a certain school rather than the actual school. the co-op program is pretty cool, but you could also do the same thing by working at any lab at umass which there are TONS of plus many world renowned professors. if you're paying for school (even just part of it) i'd say goto umass (assuming you're going to get in state). college loans for undergrad are a bitch to pay off, especially the overpriced tuition for NEU. what REALLY matters in the long run in science is your grad work. never in my years of experience have i ever seen applications get sorted out due to what school they went to....
also it helps that Umass is so damn close to mt. snow that you can get out of class at 10:30 and be riding the pipe by 11:30 on a tues. ahh, those were the days!

my friend goes to northeastern for nursing. he has like 4 tests a week which count like 20% of each class. those numbers don't even really add up, but i know he has so much work to do and has so many really hard tests.

I'm in the exact situation as you, meaning I got into umass and northeastern. I'm choosing northeastern. The co-op is going to be a great thing to have and living in the city should be fun. I've heard only good things and I really liked the feel of the campus.

yeah i grew up in Amherst and it is an awsome area. Great rock climbing, mountain biking, other outside shit plus lots of great music and overal a really nice area. I think you will get a better education at Northeastern. Umass is a huge party school but if u want to u can get a pretty decent education aswell.

that was part of what made the decision so hard. when i visited umass i fell in love with amherst, i just thought the whole area was awesome. but in the end, northeastern seemed to be the best fit.

Umass is barely off 91, right on the way to snow, stratton, okemo, killington, etc. My friend goes to northeastern and whenever i visit i have so much fun because boston is so dope. My other friend plays baseball at umass and loves that too though. However, it looks like you already made your decision. You'll definitely have fun

I'm a pharmacy major at Northeastern and I love it here. The co-op program is great, especially for what you plan on studying. Classes are competitive, and you feel obligated to push yourself academically which is good. But at the same time, a good percentage of Boston during the school year is college kids, and there's tons of other colleges around Fenway, so needless to say, we party pretty hard... Highly recommend Northeastern.

umass has great science/math departments. In my opinion, the school is only worth going to if you are going for engineering, nursing, or some other science (biomed etc..) I go to umass, currently a junior in chemical engineering and its been the best experience. The classes are amazing and the professors are top in the country for their specific studies. There is lots of diversity here as well so you see both sides of the spectrum. On a side note the partying is of course off the chain especially during concerts, tailgating, and other school events. They have already brought Tiesto, Deadmau5, and Afrojack here this semester alone. Lastly, its very close to vermont mountains. I have been part of the ski and board club for 2 years and they have amazing opportunities, one including a week in Quebec, which will change your life for the better.
