dana flahr. check him out in the latest tgr film. he has the exact same style as seth and hes young. both of them are amazing skier progressing the sport.
all the people listedabove are to old Cory is only 20 and hes doing cork 7s of 50 foot cliffs, he comestop 10 inworld tour big mountain comps and came 2nd at the us open rail jam in 03 he will be the next
u cant replace seth, nobody has the balls to throw themselves off the things he does. people will try but no one will ever replace seth or the things he does
What is amazing is that are many unknowns that can hold their own with Seth.
I know, your all going to say I do not know shit, but trust me, once you get into the small world of big mountain skiing, you start meeting many unknown local psycho shredders...
The hardest part about big mountain is that there is little or no money in it, and none of these guys will make the transfer to Morrisons fame....
Show up at Alta, J-Hole or Squaw on any epic day and you will see guys rountinely throwing down runs that are on par with anything Morrison or Hugo can do.
THe next Morrison, if we define his identity by his fame, will liekly be from the newschool park rat world ... he is probably already in videos slaying rails/park booters (maybe even a back country jump or two) - but his affilation with a movie company will likely move this second comming of Seth to the highest levels of commercialization and exposure -
My guess -
Pep or Andy have the best chance - they have the sponsorship and access to skiing with Seth and Shane - and most importantly they have the foundation and creativity to do it right.
Could have been C.R. (thank god he is better though)
Maybe it will be Bode Miller or Daron Rahlves ?
who knows -
But I do know for a fact that for every Seth, Hugo or Nobis that is on the big screen - there are 10x as many unknowns that can kill it just as hard
you're wrong, skiing in a resort style setting is nothing like skiing BC, while there are people who rip at squaw, this is a controled enviroment, that does not have the dangers of places like bella and haines. has a lot of hikeable backcountry, but those lines are well known and have been gone over thousands of times. it's one thing to rip a line that you've seen and done a bunch, it's another to slay a line which you just saw from a heli and had to choose your direction from a polaroid. and none of the places you mentioned ever really form spines which changes it too. some of those people may be able to get luck and ski some decent lines, but just tell me that those locals could make it out of morrison hotel standing on both skis.
Haha I remember seeing that on a biking documentary on TV. It was like some really sketchy 50ft gap in the trees, right? I just remember him landing hit but skiding out from clipping a tree and then out of shot you hear him say "Umm, I broke my leg". then the commentary dude as basically warren miller "it takes alot of force to break the fermur...". But then again Benchetler broke his and came back with a killer seg in War.
I have skied many days side by side with Shane and Gaffney #1 and #2 at squaw, and have had this very same discussion -
The natural talent some of our locals have, is at Seth's level - And skiing alaska/bella type lines is only a budget issue - I have been lucky enough to spend several weeks in Valdez - I have seen some "unknowns" tackle some heavy shit there -
Blind lines, roll-overs, being yelled at over the headset by the spotter that a slide has ripped out down your exit path.
Seth is incredible - BUT, there are skiers that you have never heard of, that could do the same shit - Seth, Shane, Hugo and the like would all agree - they are far more humble than you think -
Yo, yer' both correct in different ways, as a longtime whistler skier i can say that there are many locals who rip like hell, many of them become guides, patrollers, forest fighters and the like ilk, and can hold their own against the likes of Morrisson in the BC. Hell they're the ones often spotting the routes for all the "name" skiers.. it's more or less a choice of profession in the end, and yes, all those guys are mad humble, those who aren't (usually the Quebecois, heh) get their asses handed to them by mothafuckin nature. But at the same time ripping up a local mountain even like Whistler, Jackson etc is no excuse for true big mountain experience.. in this the Canucks from BC have a distinct advantage as if you rip Whistler you rip the backcountry and the interior, and that's where you learn...
Anyway I've been remarkably impressed by Mark Abma but the entire sport is so accelerated that it's not 'who will be the next Seth Morrison' but 'holy shit, there's a fuckin' swarm out there'..
On the other hand I've never seen anyone ski technical style like Scot Schmidt and many of the Europeans who can do tight ice chutes at 70 degrees like nobody's business. And then' theres the ski mountaineers who have their own scene with the climbing community and they are on an entirely other level here -- I guess this is the level Seth is getting into with his BASE jumping.
The scariest skiing experience of my life was at Chamonix during a steep clinic with the Deslauries (sp) brothers -
ropes, harness, belaying into 65-degree chutes with nothing more than some gnar rime snow covering sheer rock - knees shaking, and fucking scared all day long
If any of you kids want to truely test how strong of a skier you are, I highly recommend taken a ski/mountaneering clinic in France - it will not only humble you, but lift your entire game to a new level -
Doug C. and Scott S skied far more hairball runs in their time - real exposure over fall and die terrain (R I P D.C.)
I respect what your saying but no one is on Hugos level NO body, and yes these local rippers may ski sick sick lines and fucking kill it but lets see them do a 90 foot back flip 1st hit, a 100 foot dub front or a fuckin rodeo 7 of a 80 footer. Hugo skis faster than anyone on the planet and stomps shit that no one else can, Seth is on a different level talent wise and style wise, i know alot of amazing skiers that i compete with on the world big mountian tour and guys from Squaw and Whsitler but no one I repeat no one touches Hugo and if you think they do your on crak.,..
That being said Cory Zila will be the next seth he rips harder than anyone you speak off and hes only just turned 20..
i highly disagree.. the cats you see KILLING it at those resorts dont just ski those resorts those are the guys out exploring the areas seeing what is possible and doing lines nobody else has those are the guys that could tell you more about theyre area than anybody else... given the chance to go to ak they would kill it just as hard!
hes asking who will be the next seth as seth is inhis ownway the new glen plake of skiing, in order to do this some one must pocess amazing all round skills kill big moountain e able to filp like crazy and must be marketable seth has his hair and punk image, plake had his mowhawk its a combo of marketability and pure skill that will ,make the next Seth, Dana Flair iswellon hisway to gettingthat big but in order to do that he must drop dynastar as they dontmarket himnearlyasmuch as they should, the next person after Dana will be cory Zila you will all see this kids the man.
Thanks man, you truly understood what this thread is all about.
One of my best guesses would have been CR because of his part in focused and in show and prove. But sadly, he had a terrible accident. Seth is really good(the best out there). But you also should not forget that he was like 28 or something when he was on top of his game which means A LOT MORE EXPERIENCE. The future will tell if someone gets as good. But remember, before Seth, Glen Plake was the shit right ? At the time Glen was on top, nobody could have said that they're 100% sure that seth will be the next legend of backcountry skiing. But, a lot would have guessed on him. That's what this thread is all about.
