i dunno where they do it, there are a ton of 14ers in that area so i guess there is some extreme skiing off to the west side. i don't know anyone who has done it personally, you would need a sled or a copter probably

Hey,
As you go into downtown Leadville off of Route 92, look for a right-hand turn just past the Golden Burro Restaraunt onto Lake County Rt. 1, also known as Iowa Gulch rd, and take this aboit 4 miles east all the way up to the gate at the old Black Cloud Mine Entrance, from here you have a good 1 1/2 mile hike or easy 15 minute sled ride up to the good stuff on the west face of Mt. Sherman (a fourteener) and the sick alpine bowl directly below it. The terrain to the north and south of here is pretty sick too; fairly safe on Avy conditions as well from what I hear. Mt. Bross, Democrat, and Lincoln all are connected via the same ridgecrest on the Mosquito Range, and have excellent lines through tight, hairy couloirs and chutes. If you traverse north from near the top of Mt. Sherman, this will take you down into California Gulch, another great area if you stay up high, and very close to downtown Leadville. Beware though even if you are used to the altitude; this is some of the highest BC skiing in Colorado (11-14,000 ft.) and its easy to get exhausted hiking. Good luck!

I heard a lot about sleds getting caught in avy's over there, are any of those routes particularly safer than others?

in the city itself there just drive up west 5th street past the mines and get your sled on... or go up w 7th street and it goes in the other dirction.. but beware abandonded mine and mine shafts are all over the fuck. and signs can be buried. but the areas you can get to. are quite amazing.. and your up at like 12.000 feet, crazy rocky shit!
