I got this idea from the k2 hellbents, when i first heard of them i thought this was possibly what they did. Picture a ski with a convex shape near the tip and tails, so the base is slighty higher in the middle then the sides. It could possibly be used in conjunction with the hellbent design or stand alone. The purpose of this would be for manuverability for buttering. What does everything else think?

I don't understand how that would make buttering more 'maneuverable'? Care to elaborate on how you think this design would work exactly?

ooops pardon my retartedness. i missread your post. my appologies. but i dont know how that would help things. ithink skis are already like that a little. they make em like that to help edging.

I'm pretty sure he isn't talking about reverse camber, the idea I got from it was that if you looked down the base of the ski, from tip-to-tail, the base would be higher in the center....so like a reverse camber, except instead of front-to-back, it would be side-to-side. Still not sure if that's right, or how it would function in any capacity to help with buttering, but maybe if he did a mock-up picture in MS Paint and a better description it would make sense.

that sounds good. AHrder to catch edges on rails, uinder rotated spins etc. Maybe in cinjunction with the atomics extra esges. I would buy that ski.

think how much easier buttering would be, you could get the ski out from under you, and still have enough surface area to balance/not worry about catching edges. It would be a progressive convex shape, starting very gently 6-10inches from the bindings and getting more and more convexed as you get closer to the tips and tails.

you tilt the ski like normal. You might have to go a bit firther to get the same about of grip

i dont think grip would be too much of an issue because buttering is basically the opposite of gripping. Most edge grip comes in under the binding anyway. This would probably have to be a park specific ski, or maybe a backcountry ski (butters in the pow).

I'm thinking this convex combined with rocker or reverse camber (as mentioned about the Hellbents) would be really sketchy though, that little running surface is already all but useless unless it's in pow or pure park.

Beginner snowskates are built like that, harder to catch an edge on boards, easier to turn.

Seems like a good idea, but feels like rails would be harder to balance on, but at the same time you could prolly make some new variations of grinds since you could tilt the skis without rubbing edge.

Same time though, I think it would be kinda weird skiing unless your on an edge, seems like it'd be much easier to wash out. And on ice this ski seems close to impossible from my perspective.

the nitro t0 snowboard has that design, with a second set of edges running about a cm or two in from the edges. basically, the entire base is flat like a normal board, but then a cm away from the edges, it gets a reinforced edge like what atomic does on the base, and then the base bevels up at about 3-5 degrees to the edge of the board, where there is another edge that is used for carving. basically, since you're never sliding rails on that outside edge, it stays sharp, the inner edge takes the beating, and you dont hang up on rails anymore, as well as it making the board super buttery.

I wonder what that would do in pow if it started to get convex a little after the rocker rise in the tip and tail. It would probably be way surfy. I wonder if it would mess alot with control?

If this ever catches on/works this guy should get the credit

I think you're right about the surfy feeling, cause that's how alot of surfboards and wakeboards are made. After doing some more reading though I don't think the Skate Banana has a convex base, there's another model that Lib is/was testing and hopefully going to release for the 07/08 season called the Banana Hammock, and it is reverse camber and sidecut with the convex base, here are a couple shots I found, click and blow them up to get an idea of the shape:

it would definetly have to be a park specific and pow specific ski, maybe the rockered one is pow specific while the other is park specific with no rocker. i like the feedback.

this idea seems like poo to me. it would seem so hard to get an edge to turn, and your ankles would be fucking murdered. thats like trying to balance when standing on two pipes. seems ridiculous to me, and rails....youd have less balance cus theyred be less surface area.

i thought that this idea was already being used by a company. it was called like, "extruded base" or something. and i have been thinking baout this idea too. it would make grinding rails and boxes easier as well as buttering.

You'd still have edge grip! It doesn't come from the base, and that's what's curved. And rails would be just as easy, who slides with their bases flat on the rail anyway? It would be ahrder to catch an edge whil sliding though.

I think it's an awesome idea.

yes rail balance would not be affected, the convexed area would only be at the tip and tails not under foot.
