Skiing with a torn ACL ?

So has anyone on here done it? How long did you wait before you went back out to ski?

This is my second go around and thankfully this time it's just an ACL as compared to last time everything was torn plus cartiledge and bone chips.

^An idiot would ski the park, a realist would ask his Dr. (who has worked with the US ski team) who said I could if i stay on the blue and greens.

So I know there are people out there and I'm just curious how timid they felt. My dad has skied the last 5 years w/o his.

yeah dude take it easy, I tore mine partially on Monday and physio told me a good 4-6 weeks at least the time I can walk normally, and I won't even risk it cauz for sure I'll want to ski hard and it's risky.. blows though cauz season on the east coast isn't here for long... my opinion is to rest it and come back strong next year instead of having set-backs for the rest of your life

I tore my ACL in the beginning of January. I skied about two weeks after I tore It from around Jan 22 to March 11 and I had my surgery on March 12. Try to take it easy and dont go through the park. Just try to take it easy and stay on the groomers and nothing more then a black diamond.

i have a torn ACL. i am having it replaced monday. in the month since i did it, i am pretty much 100 percent. i know i could ski blues and greens. while 98 percent of the time im fine and it dont bother me, that 2 percent where i do something where i need the support REALLY REALLY suck. its not worth it, specially if you cant ski at your normal level, which i find more aggrivating, and i hurt myself trying stuff. so dont do it, have it fixed, and deal with it. its part of the game, and it sucks.

I'd say no, it's not worth it. You have the possibility of messing more up in your knee than you already have and being in a lot more pain. When doctors tell me I can ski but to "take it easy" I know their definition is probably way different than mine, so in that case it's not really a smart choice when you could screw up your knee real bad doing something way cooler than skiing a green run.

If I tore my ACL I wouldn't be skiing at all just so it could heal correctly. I wouldn't want to screw up my knee for all the future ski seasons I'll have just so I can get a few more days into the current one

you might be able to ski easy with a good brace, but see your doctor. The problem with ligaments are they don't refrow if torn. So if these guys are saying "let it heal" it won't if it is torn. I had a complete tear and needed surgery, couldnt ski until 6 months after surgery

It depends on what you're talking about, are you wanting to ski in between the injury and the surgery (not the best idea)., or do you plan on rehabbing, not getting surgery, and skiing without out an ACL for good?

Some people have manged to go for years with no ACLs, and still have succesful careers. Lauri Lassila from Finland skied moguls on the World Cup circuit for 10 years and he is ACL deficient in BOTH knees. He was able to ski in braces and still won lots of medals.

The most common approach, assuming it is completely torn, is to get the surgery. If you plan on doing that, then skiing beforehand is probably an unnecessary risk.

I tore my ACL last weekend, rested for most of the day, went back into the park and my meniscus flipped over so it's double thick on one side and bone on bone in the back. I can't walk now and I wouldn't wish what this feels like on anyone. The surgeon said I could have just as easily torn my PCL and MCL with my meniscus.
Do you want to go thru and recover from 3-4 surgeries instead of just one?

I don't give a shit about the ACL deficient mogul guy as mentioned above, don't tell these kids that shit. If I went out with a bad acl with your input and did what I feel like now, I would find you and beat you with my crutches.

Hey man, the guy asked a question, I just gave him some factual information. There was no "advice" given. But if you want....

A completely different example is American Evan Dybvig, who skied without an ACL in 2002 in order to compete in the Olympics.

If any of you saw the Olympic event on TV you might remember his unstable knee giving out completely as he landed the bottom air.

There, now maybe people will remember that instead.

I have had five knee sugeries over 3 seasons on two knees and i have totaly given up on the idea of my knees ever being the same again. There fucked and there gunna stay fucked untill by the merical of medical science they can turn my knee into a robot knee. untill then i just go with the idea that im just not aloud to fall anymore. its worked out this season, but im prolly gunna get to cock in the spring and hurt it again. knees fucking suck. I wish they could just botle my knee brace to me bones. whatever. im pretty bitter about this subject.

(i know this was started like forever ago, but...) yeah seriously wait, and make sure to get it checked out. i had a complete acl tear in feb, but i never got it looked at thinking i was fine, so i waited 5 weeks and the first jump i even rode over my knee popped out again. so now i have to get surgery which should have been done in the first place.

it depends on if it's a partial tear or complete, and it's probably better if you're not the one doing your own diagnosis. if it's a complete tear your knee wont be as stable as was before if you don't get it fixed. like they said, don't be dumb. let yourself heal.

yeah - old thread...  I blew an ACL 2 weeks before a trip to Summit County.  I ordered a custom fitted/molded brace that bolted into the tongue of my ski boot. I didn't cancel my trip, took it easy and enjoyed the week.   I had surgery 2 weeks after the trip.  CTi2 brace from Innovative sports.

The point is I did all the things I possibly could short of not skiing to prevent any further damage.

i don't know about skiing but Travis rice snowboarded for half the season with a torn acl like 2 or 3 years ago

You can't "let it heal," you need surgery for a torn ACL.

I gave mine a month, then went back out and skied with a brace. DO NOT SKI WITHOUT A BRACE. I would not ski the park either. After a couple of weeks skiing timidly I decided it was not worth it and went and got surgery. Be careful, you do not need an ACL to ski, but it does give the rest of your knee stability.

not the best idea, but it can be done, i tore mine along with my minescus last January about 35 days into a 78 day season, i was sore for a week or so and i was limping around, but at that point i didn't even know i had tore it. i found out in august, i skied 104 days this year and had surgery a week ago yesterday. those of you who say its stupid to ski with a knee injure are just un informed, there are people with knee injuries all around you that they have elected not to fix. my dad tore his acl 15 years ago and still skis 25 days a year. its all about how you take care of it. i didn't push it to much this year and i was fine, i twisted it out a few times sure, but thats bound to happen skiing that much. i wore a light neoprene brace and that helps a ton. other than that ride low dins and enjoy it, do surgery when it is good for you. i cant walk for 3 weeks now, but i had a terrific season so im not complaining!

hahah, your high on percs huh!? Don't know if you read my post up there, but I skied with a torn acl and if you have little tears in your meniscus like I did, there is no acl holding your bones tight together, and my leg seperated when I went over a 4 inch mound of snow, and my cartilage flipped in between my bones. I had to have surgery twice cause of that mild stunt.

No side to side activity for me from Feb-end of November instead of the normal 6 months.

If I could go back I would of given my skis away to some lucky kid so i couldn't leave the lodge

mine was torn more than half the last season.  i just skied alot of rails and jumps here and there, but took it easy.  sometimes it would pop out of place for a second and it really sucked, but now im a month out of surgery and got full mobility.  i had tons of fun out on the hill with my friends everyday, and my knee was strong and ready as i went into surgery.

unlike the MCL, the ACL has no blood running through it so therefore it can't repair itself.

surgery is the only way to go. those that don't do are right fucked!
