So I read in the paper today that our Prime Minister sent pamphlets to schools for National Flag Day. The pamphlets said the colours of the flag represent red for the blood and sacrifice Canadians of made to protect our freedom and the white for peace and liberty. WOW. It's too bad that the colours were given to Canada as our official colours by King George V. Good job Harper. Warp the meaning of our flag to try and foster war support.

Well that's kind of a piss off. Since when has propaganda gone down well in this country? Not since I've been alive. Stupid mistake.

Yeah, I'm proud we peacefully became our own country.
That's something to be proud of. It's also why we have the flag colours we use, none of the BS Harper's trying to feed schoolkids.

Thats fucking retarded. There are far better ways to try and get more support for the military and the Afghanistan campaign.
Personally I wish we never gave up the Red Ensign. The flag we're stuck with now is basically the logo of the Liberal Party of Canada. Fucking Pearson.

Lol, that's only because the U.S. had just had a bloody revolution with the British, and the Brits had more things to worry about than Canada...
Sorry, dont mean to downtone you're 'revolution' hahaha.

my geomatics teacher was telling me that the mercator map projection was used as propaganda during the cold war. that projection shows that russia, area wise, is nearly twice the size of north america and they used that to scare the north american population

yea written by tim naumetz.
author of such articles as http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/news/story.html?id=9d545fe4-c050-4a6b-ba16-72fde9a5fdad&k=70961
he's just a bleeding heart liberal with a political agenda that pulls out all the stops to create parallels between Harper and Bush.
then he reports what harper did what, nearly 4 weeks after? give me a break. looks like you ate that article up.
kids these days need to learn the values of honour and respect. there is nothing wrong with respecting and honoring the ones who sacrificed their lives for what we have today and there is nothing wrong with peace either. so stop trying to act like its fucking evil.

wow buddy... wow. doesn't matter when it happened. it still happened. I think we should start teaching the kids in Canada's schools that the national animal of Canada is the beaver because the beaver fur trade helped finance the army that defended Canada against the Americans and kept Canada free from slavery. It is one thing to support the Canadian troops and supporting peace and what Canada represents, but we shouldn't be warping our national symbols to meet an agenda.

Why the fuck would you have to go and link it up like that?
Harper apparently said blood spilled, aka ww1 and 2. in which we fucked up some germans, though we did let some bad ass russians have their way. war is a fairly common occurrence, and I don't see why we can't be proud that we've gotten our hands bloody a couple times.
I'm curious as to why someone has to point out the tiniest little problem with this and blow it out of proportion, just because you don't like this "war" against the islamic jihadists or whatever in afghanistown, doesn't mean you have to tear apart something that could help a couple kids out there be proud of their grandparents who fought their legs off in some cases. I'm sure that we could overlook the slight fact that it is pro war, and stand tall for our country. As long as we know that it's propaganda, we can still support our country. This isn't the best time to get divided over something. From my point of view, which isn't very informed, I would have to say that the propaganda in the States is hugely present, like the USS whatever that sits in plain view in New York, or those fucking shirts, and few of them recognize it for what it is. Now, hopefully in Canada, we are mindful of that, but we shouldn't let a little debate tear us apart. There are thousands of different ideals in this country, but there are times where we all have to come together. I think we like debate a little too much in this country. And we are all trying so hard to look smart that we tear each other's opinions apart, even thought they may be damn good, just for the sake of tearing them apart, not even to promote some constructive criticism.

its called a democracy. debate, differing views and being able to express those views is what makes us free. I don't think elementary school students would recognize propaganda either, if they even knew what propaganda was.

I never said I liked the article. I didn't even read past the first bit that outlined the distribution of pamphlets and what they said the colours of our flag represented. Seems you're taking this thread as a personal attack on your beliefs. Ok, you're a conservative, I get it, I am left wing. We're not arguing platforms in this thread though, so you can stop being so defensive. I would be pissed off if the NDP party did this. It just isn't right to lie to the future generations of our nation to further your own platform. Your platform should be able to stand on its own if its at all worthy being incorporated into our country.

Don't worry about the reporters 'spin' on the subject, aren't you even a little upset about the fact that this leaflet was sent with complete misinformation??

Red and white were approved as Canada's official colours in the proclamation of the royal arms of Canada by King George V. in 1921.
I think maybe it was a metaphor.
Post the actual article.

Lmao, It wasn't until 1921 that we got our colours from Britain and 1967 until we oficially seperated, so the "bloody revolution" with the americans was ancient history. Canada became it's own country and yet remained status as a member of the commonwealth by passing laws and adopting a charter, not because the brits had bigger fish to fry. Red and White forever...
Oh yeah, Vote Green!

and the article in question :
"Mr. Kenney marked, in his words, National Flag of Canada Day by announcing the government had sent brochures and posters about the flag's history to public schools and public libraries across the country. He explained the symbolism of the colours.
"Red for valour and sacrifice of our serving men and women; white for purity and peace," Kenny said in his statement."
...
"An aide to Mr. Kenny later claimed his interpretation contained a grain of heraldic accuracy. Both colours carried England and France through centuries of war mixed with periods of peace."
The entire article is about the federal conservatives communications strategy and points to this incident as an example. It's not the central issue.
It's actually a pretty interesting read if you're into political science.
