Scott P4's vs. Gotama's

After all this snow in the east, i really wanna grab a new pair of big boys. I ride the karma's and love them. being a fan of volkl i was looking towards the gotama's. then i was reminded of the p4's. I hear both skis are realatively stiff and pretty decent for charging but would also float real nice in pow. i'm a smaller guy at 5'9'' 135, but i do like to ski hard. anybody know how these skis compare? also does anyone know how they compare to prophet 100's?

you're looking for the exact same ski i am. don't forget about vct's as well. i've been leaning towards gotamas myself but haven't heard anything at all about the p4's yet. for some reason i'm leaning away from the prophet100's but i don't really know why

Yo, just back from Whistler and seeing the P4s, Gotamas and Prophet 100s in action.

For a small guy, I'd hit up the P4s -- they are thin like the Foil but with more sidecut, the lightest of the bunch, and they cut through pow like a hot knife through butter. Super easy to spin too. I think they will be a favourite for big mountain over here in North America soon. We're talking 106 underfoot though so forget most east coast resort skiing. At least there is some sidecut though so you'll be able to edge.

As for the Gotamas, as to be expected they are a little heavier -- but not much-- ! -- and more of a big mountain ski than the P4s: thicker, will cut through chop & crud & windblown more easily. But not as heavy as a K2. Less sidecut too, thus more stable in the deep but less easy to manouevre on-piste.

The Prophet 100s are, I think, more specialized than either. They are more unidirectional to begin with, they have the torsion plates front and back, and they love to go FAST -- I wouldn't get these unless you lived out West and can haul ass on 50 degrees.

^good info, im torn here too on what ski to buy.....ive always liked Volkl stuff so i was leaning pretty heavily towards the gotamas, but lately have been hearing alot of good stuff about the p4s from a couple friends who ride them......tough call for sure

I can't comment on the P4's other than they are def. lighter than the Gotamas. I own Gotamas and they are a pretty decent all around ski. They really hold their own in the crud & pow though. Might be the best alround ski out there for consistent big mountain conditions. Buddy was bang-on when he said these are stiff and heavier. Forget about them in the park...too bulky. That's my two cents.

haha, fat skis on the east coast. and gotama's aren't that stiff, their medium at the most. just compared to most of the wet noodles they're selling as park skis these days...buying a ski that's like 100+ underfoot is just a waste for the east coast, it's not like you get three foot dumps regularly. and the prophet 100s have a decent amount of sidecut, and are actually pretty good all around. i'd recommend them over goats for the east cause they are better in the trees.

I dunno, you can ride 100 out East, it just depends on style -- you need some expert ability on ice with that width. I think I'm gonna pick up a pair of Rossi Scratch BC, which are 98, only 'cause they are hella cheap over at evogear.com.. The Scratch BC is real close to the P4 from what I can tell.

Not true. P4s are heavier than Gotamas by abot a pound per ski, when comparing the 181 P4 and 183 Gotama.

I've skied the gotomas a few times.....i cant beleive how well that ski carves. but for the east, look into a mantra, a little more practical big board

I have the Gots, VCT's and P4's... no way in hell that the P4's are lighter than the other 2. 10lbs for them, the other two are just under 9lbs. P4's super stable a little better in crud than the other two, softer in the tips, but stiffer under foot.
Better float and more turny(ski really short)than the Gots and VCT, sucks on ice. The Got and VCT are better on ice, straightlining and leaves you with more energy because of the weight.

^interesting quiver. what are your thoughts on gotama vs. vct? those are the two skis i'm looking at for next season.

The VCT does everything that the Got does, except almost as good. The VCT skis shorter, easier to land jumps(could be the binding position though), softer tip, tail is stiffer and floats better in the deep..... Got is turns quicker, more stable, better on ice. So which do I ski more? The VCT because the Got's bases are superthin and the VCT's are pretty tough... not nearly as tough as the Scott P4's though.

finally some senseability, the widest ski you need for the east should be less than 100 mm. wider than that, you're into big mountain boards. not many big mountains in the east.

i dont understand why people rag on the east. no we dont get spoiled with 3 foot dumps every other day. (we got almost 3 feet on valentines day and its been dumping ever since. i skied pow today, its april and my home mountain shuts down tomorrow). so on epic days, i want the big boards. and who says their not fun to mess with when its not waist deep. so thanks for the info everybody, and for those who look down on us in the east coast, im just asking for a little respect.

+ yah I'm heading to Jay tomorrow, late Spring 2 foot dump! but I hear the point here, which is that over 100 is designed for STEEPS and pow, and the East might get pow in the trees but not steeps, and anything wider than 100 in Eastern trees on the terrain here is not the best idea and overkill. Super-fatties come into play when ripping big turns down steep glacier and bowl terrain.

well for the people who say that these skis are too big for the east, what would be an appropriate deep snow ski for the east? i was originally thinking gotamas or mantras, but for VT what is prob the best. it doesnt have to be a quiver ski, just wider ski

^^ Maybe the scratch bc? Just under 100, plus if you get bored in the pow it will rip in the park too.

Jp vs J's would be great too, and they are really light.

rossi scratch bc is one of the most versatile skis i've ever ridden. maybe the 182 4frnt vct as well. that ski has less shape and is better for charging pow and broken snow, but not quite as good on hardpack. if you've got another pair of skis, get the 4frnt. if you want one pair for everything, get the scratch bc/brigade.

i live on the west coast and at my home mountain there are more pow days than alot of other places. i ride scratch bc's and they are pretty good all around. i think im gonna pick up a pair of p4's though because i would like a little more flotation. i have been reading alot of reviews and they all say that the p4's are lighter than the gotoma and vct and rip just as hard. the price is way better too(below 600). i can't decide if i should put dukes on them or not though. any thoughts?

P4s are nice, but they are NOT lighter than the Gotamas! A 183 Gotama is about 400 grammes lighter than a 181 P4.

Gotamas aren't that stiff. But for someone your size they should be good.

I own the p4 in 191 cm... They are sick- stiff under the boot with soft tip and tail... Good for pow and with the sidecut they still rip turns on the groomers. Get 'em.
