West:
Detroit... My favourite to win the cup. They're built to absolutely ease through the playoffs, especially with their ability to completely limit the opposition's scoring opporunities. If opposing teams will be firing the puck at Hasek 20 times a night, opposing teams won't stand a chance. That, coupled with the fact that
San Jose... The Sharks' scoring punch could KO nearly any team in the league. Could is the keyword. They employ a reliable defensive system as well, so watch out for San Jose throughout the late stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs.
Vancouver... Roberto Luongo is the next Martin Brodeur, and the Sedin twins have been outstanding. Their 2 trade deadline acquisitions, former Canuck Brent Sopel, and veteran Brian Smolinski will make the Canucks that much better going into the big show, so don't expect any repeats of past playoff performances from this Vancouver squad.
East:
Ottawa... Best all around team out of the east. Since they woke up from their horrible start, they've been the most dangerous offensive team in the league. Game in, game out they've proven their grit. And they have played next to best defensively in the Eastern Conference. Goaltending will make or break the Sens yet again this spring.
New Jersey... Self explanatory. All hope lies on the shoulders of Martin Brodeur, and the question remains... can he keep up this unholy pace of his into June? If so, watch for NJ in the finals. If not, then they better learn how to put the puck in the net, as a 5th-from-worst NHL offense casts serious doubt in my mind.
Buffalo... They've been at the top all year long, as their high flying offense and knack for sacrificial-style defense have come through in the clutch game in, game out. But some would go so far as to say their style is reckless, and with a recent string of serious injuries, there is merit to that school of thought. Buffalo MUST stay healthy to win... but would that mean a change in their style of play? There is a suprising amount of uncertainty surrounding the NHL's top team.
