I have a friend(non NS member) who is moving to Bellingham and is look at housing right now but doesn't know the area. I told him I'd ask around to help him out. Where are good areas to live that are close to Bellingham as well as Mt Baker. What about areas immediatly in Bellingham as well. Are the bad areas to stay away from in Bellingham??? If you live full time in the area do you enjoy living there??

i live more or less in fairhaven, and its a good part of town. mt baker is an hour n a half drive from bham, but its easy to hitch if you dont have a car.
if you want to live closer to baker, and not in bellingham, there are a couple towns on the way to the mountain: Deming, Maple Falls, and Glacier. deming is small, maple falls is smaller, and glacier is smallest.
the season is almost over, so my advice would be to wait to move till next season, get a job at the mountain and live up there (employee housing). unless he already has a job lined up in bham, or already has one.

there arent too many bad places to live in bellingham, pretty chill city. dont move to deming or maple falls. deming consits of a high school, casino and library. maple falls has some fucked up people. glacier is more centralized and really chill. 30 minutes from ski area. its hard to get a job in glacier though.

Yeah, Deming pretty much sucks. I live in Deming. Maple Falls is okay, but Glacier is pretty awesome.

I rode at Baker about a month ago and loved it. Defintly one of my favorite moutnains!! Not only was the skiing unbelievable but I really like the mellow vibe in the lodge. The only concern I told my friend about living near Mt Baker in Glacier is that it's seemed really small. But I was wondering from locals what Glacier is like to live in and what do most people do for work there? Most of the mountain towns near where I live the locals seem very redneck or towny but I didn't get that vibe in Glacier. Is that true or are there towniess?? I think he is also thinking living in or near Bellingham so he can find work.

^some people in glacier work in bham, some work in town, some work at the mountain.
glacier is pretty chill though. kinda redneckish but hey, its baker, who cares? the locals throw huge parties everyonce and a while (went to one during the Banked Slalom and it was huge, 250+ people, vert ramps, kegs scattered everywhere), so thats always fun.
for work, i suggest getting a job at the mountain if your going to live in glacier. its not hard at all to get one. and its always nice to get first chair, EVERY SINGLE POW DAY. sick. plus they have employee housing at the mountain and in glacier. for 6 dollars a day with 2 hot meals. not a bad deal if you axe me.

Any complaints or issues from living up there, or should everyone really just do what Warren Miller tells us in each movie?

some people really like living up there....as some other people hate it. the guy-girl ratio isnt very good, and on the weekends/holidays there is 6 people to a room. 2 rooms to 1 toilet. but it still would be pretty fun. riding on clear nights in the moonlight. party every night for whoever has alcohol. everybodys really chill up there. except recently one of my friends got his money jacked. but usually stuff isnt stolen. i guess it comes down to how much you like riding powder everyday vs. your common day ammenities.

one of my friends that is working up there this season says that it is better to live in the employee lodging in Glacier rather than up at the mountain.

employee housing in glacier (either A house, B house, or C house) is not available for first years. im going to try and get on the list for one of those houses this year, for next year.
first years: i suggest the E-lodge at the mountain, or if your a trust fund baby/have a means of transportation, i'd say do it up in bellingham.
complaints? not really. the e-lodge can be pretty dodgy at times... with thefts and whatnot (cliff said, his buddy got money stolen. true) with money, gear, drugs, etc. however it doesnt happen often, and when it does things get sorted out promptly if it does happen. DISCLAIMER: if you like your privacy, DONT MOVE INTO THE E-LODGE.
